Title: Videos not playing on Samsung Galaxy S4 with Gizmo
Post by: BrentP on June 02, 2013, 12:46:32 pm
I just got a Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Gizmo app for android and I can't get any videos to play within the app. Music and everything else works fine just not movies and videos. At first I thought this might be a problem with flash since flash is not pre-installed on the S4; however, I installed flash onto my phone to fix the problem but still no luck. The video will play for a second and then it closes and goes back to the previous menu screen. Is anyone else having this problem with the new Galaxy S4 or anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance :)

I'm having the same issue on my Droid DNA. When I look at my computer I can see it converting through task manager, but the file just plays like 1 or 2 sec and stops, even If I let it convert for a while.

Could one of you please revert to this build:
http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/channels/v18/latest/MediaCenter180166.exe
and see if it makes a difference?
You should backup your library and you MUST remove the directory under your User->AppData->Roaming->J River->Media Center 18->Plugins->avcodec before trying the build.
Different android devices are very sensitive to the audio encoding.
Report back please, thanks.

Still no luck it still just prepares the video and then either plays it for a second and goes back to the menu or just completely goes back to the menu without playing anything. Has anyone got videos to work on the S4?

We've seen a similar problem with the galaxy note as well. It could be a hardware issue since on other devices, the same version of the OS works fine. Tracing shows that it's trying to seek the TS file during conversion which isn't doable. Why it's trying to do that, we can't determine.

Why would one watch a movie on such a tiny little screen? Don’t own a TV?

They do plug into a tv and come in very handy if you're not home. I know I have to get the Neon codec for MX video player on my DNA and S3, not sure if it's the same on the S4. I assume it is the same on S4 since it's a similar snapdragon chipset.

I have the exact same problem on my S4 as the OP.

make sure your neon codec is up to date, and that your mx player is set to HW+ when streaming by default

actually just realized that mx player will not be responsible for default playback even if selected by the system. Androids default media player is stagefright which manufacturers might be disabling in favor of their own. if you are rooted you can adding the following lines to your /system/build.prop File:

media.stagefright.enable-player=1
media.stagefright.enable-http=1

this will enable stagefright as default OS media handler as a player and for http requests.

I checked both those setting and they were not set to "1" but were already both set to "true" which I'm guessing is correct.
It also had entries for -http, -meta, -aac and a few other and were all set to true.

media.stagefright.enable-player=true
media.stagefright.enable-http=true

Same problem here with 5 Samsung S4s in two families with two different Media Center installs. None work for video anymore. It starts preparing, and then drops back to the last menu.  Anyone know what happened?

Thanks

I noticed Gizmo got an update today. I thought, wow!
So I updated to todays version, got the latest version of MC19 and tried it.
Now instead of going back to the menu it goes black after preparing and stays that way.
I removed the Gizmo app and rebooted the S4 and reinstalled Gizmo. The first test played a few frames of the video and then went black. A different video just went back to the menu like it did before.

Is it just S4 owners? Or other devices? I can see restricting resources to fix something experienced by few.
It is just strange it works on other devices like my Samsung Tab7. I am sure it worked on the S4 a while back. I liked to show off the feature and used it to promote MC. So it must be something about my phone?
It's a ATT Samsung S4 32 gig with Android 4.2.2.

Thanks for listening.

Do you have MC 19.0.37?

I did have .37, and today I added .38
Unfortunately no change with either. Some go right back to the menu, others start to show one frame and then fade out, like it was over.
Perf Mon showed a spike in both CPU and Network when first requested, then they drop back to idle.

you can give this a shot, better than nothing and with a
couple of extra steps you can have it playing in mx player possibly:

Hi Everybody - I have just got a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - and I'm having exactly the same issues as everybody else!!
Video launches, plays for 2 or 3 sec then jumps back to the video selection menu.
To get this solved would be really great (imperative??)
Thanks everone

I also have the same problem. It seems that it is not only a Samsung issue:
Sony Xperia Tablet Z LTE / Android 4.2.2
Gizmo 19.0.50
MC 19.0.74

Since posting this, I have upgraded to MC 19.0.67 and I am still having the same problem with Gizmo.

Is anything being done to fix Gizmo for Android?

19.0.87 is current.  But the problem seems to be at the video player level on the phone, not with Gizmo.  Video in Gizmo works fine on some Samsung phones, but not on others.

Perhaps it is hardware-software related?

The commonality between the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Sony XPeria Z1 is that they use the same Chipset, CPU and GPU.

Chipset: Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800
CPU: Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400
GPU: Adreno 330

The Sony Tablet Z LTE was also reported to have the same problem. It's hardware includes:

Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064
CPU: Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait
GPU: Adreno 320

I am no video hardware expert, but perhaps this might give a hint as to where the problem is.

Surely you will want to solve this problem since these are all high end model phones/tablets and others will be following with the same hardware.

Its not related to the hardware. If you take these devices and flash Android AOSP or CM on them, it suddenly starts playing just fine.
Its something these companies did to their software.

Greetings:
What is Android AOSP or CM please?

Update now: got it via Google.  I will read more about it.

Thanks.
