Title: Unable to Install MC18 on XP SP3
Post by: AnalogRoaming on June 17, 2013, 12:29:20 am
I have four computers that use MC, been using MC since MC10 without issue. I successfully installed MC18 on 3 out of 4 machines. However, the fourth machine will not install any version of MC18. The download from the main JRiver site and the most recent build on this forum both give the same error message:

I double click the downloaded file, extraction begins, and then I get the message "Install Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I have tried:
1. redownloading the files
2. running as an administrator
3. Rebooting the computer
4. screaming at the computer
5. Taking a shot of whiskey.

None of these worked. Although #5 is starting to feel pretty good.

I'd appreciate any insights into this. There was another post of hte forum but the guy said he solved his problem by reinstalling Windows.

I'm not doing that.

Logging in as admin and running the installer might yield different results.  You might also try temporarily disabling your your anti-virus and firewall.

HTH & good luck!  :)

No luck.

I've never seen anything like this. No matter what I try, I cannot get this installed. I tried under different accounts with no luck. The same installer works on another computer just fine. I tried as the local admin, I tried with my user added to the admin group. I disabled virus checkers. I turned off the firewall. I ran sfc /scannow to see if there were broken Windows files.

Still stumped. Thankfully this machine has JRCM 17 on it which seems to have no trouble connecting to my JRMC18-powered server.

Is there an alternative install I can try?

The install below is the one JR considers the stable distribution ...
http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/channels/v18/stable/MediaCenter180194.exe

else, you can browse previous threads looking for previous versions ...

HTH ...

Thanks... but no good. No matter which installer I use, it crashes
