Hi All,
Has anyone noticed a drop in sound quality with "97?
Thinner and even distorted in the highs which make them more aggressive.
Back to "95 and all is well again.
My bud on the PC version noticed the same problem on the latest PC version and also dropping back fixed it.

Am I really the only one who has notices an SQ difference with the latesversion "97 onwards?
It can't be just me....?
As mentioned, a friend with a PC noticed it too on the most recent PC upgrade.
We can't both be crazy?
Gee... I hope not!

I was a bit skeptical (and also, I have been using JRiver only from version 197) but I must say I share the same feeling as GROBEC.
Since I've tried version 195, I find version 197 a bit harsh in the high frequencies in comparison.
Is there any reasonable fact to explain this ?
-
hmm intresting ... I haven't noticed any difference.
Are you guys using a soundcard or an external DAC? Going through a preamp or using MC to go direct through towards an amp? Lots of DSPs?
-
As far I'm concerned, no DSP but bit perfect path to a Ayre QB-9 DAC.

Ah HA ... there's your problem. You haven't bought the DSD upgarde Ayre just put out. Or better yet, you can replace that DAC with a crappy one, and you won't hear a difference ;D
Nan just kidding ... surprises me there would be a difference though, I run to an external DAC to a Linn preamp and no change on my end. Sorry don't have a clue why it would have changed for you
[edit] didn't pay attention to the forum name, you are running the Mac version maybe there was some tweaking, I'm on a PC -- so really don't know what I'm talking about :-[

Yes Indeed, I'm running a Mac (DSD upgrade for the Ayre is planned also ;) ). GROBEC says one of his friends who uses JRiver on a PC noticed the same problem between the latest version and the previous one but I cannot check it out.
Thank you anyway for sharing your experience.

Definitely a "thinner" SQ than the previous versions.
Nothing else changed in my system
Mac Mini>firewire ext drive.to PWD MKII Bridge to Jeff Rowland MC6 amp to Wilson Watt Puppies.
Will try 18.0.201 and see if it has changed again.
Wish there was an uninstall so I could re-install clean without doing it manually.

Agree !!! Definitely a "thinner" and more recessed SQ .
-
Just A/B 18.0.201 vs 18.0.195
.195 has more body, is less congested and sounds cleaner.
It is subtle though. You need good transducers to detect it.
Wilson Watt Puppies should be good enough to tell :-)
My ESL 57's are definitely revealing the differences.
Don't understand what could have caused the SQ to go down. ?
-
Yes indeed. Sound is also thinner on version 197, true. More body on version 195. Definitely agree even if subtle.

Nothing has changed that might affect sound quality.
