Title: move videos out of movies and tv shows
Post by: jondavis on July 18, 2013, 01:56:15 pm
I just downloaded JRiver and the system decided to scan all my media and drop it into the folders where it thought it belonged.
Of course I have way more videos then just movies and tv shows.
I can see how to make new folders but not sure how to change the library tag from like movies to sports or tv shows to concert videos.
Is there a way to do that?

I deleted all videos out of movies, then all videos removed out of the other folders like tv shows.
Then I added just one video to concert videos which then shows up in all the rest of the folders like movies and tv shows.
Is there no way to keep those separated?

I think I found it.
You have to add the tag - Media Type and Media Sub Type before you can change them.

Next question then is can we create new media sub types?

Not currently. Which subtypes do you need? A bunch were added for MC17/18.

Documentaries                   Genre
Dubs
Fan Films                          Genre

In many cases, what you mean by subtype, most would consider genre; the good news is that that field IS editable,a nd you cna even put in multiple entries for each file.

I'll see what I can come up with.
It would be nice to add a few more sub categories.
Real Player lets you name the video category but if you export your list and import it to another computer then the category goes back to just video most of the time.

Media Sub Type is generally used to drive special program behavior.  If the stock values meet your needs, use them (and at least set them appropriately so that MC will do that special behavior - which you haven't learned yet).

Use Genre or Keywords, or your own custom field if you have other needs or want other behavior based on the field.

Also remember that you can highlight multiple files and change the field value in all of them at once.
