The contents of the Bookmark field cannot be read by humans--I've tried--but often the Bookmark field must be displayed in order to quickly clear a rogue bookmark, which can occasionally hang if very close to the end of a video. At the same time, the gibberish-based contents can be very long and push other fields out of the way.
MY REQUEST: Can we have a field-based "Clear Bookmark" button, similar to the "Play Button"?
-
The bookmark has to be chicken scratch for DVD. That's because DVD navigator exposes the position in some custom, complex (ie. binary) way that handles titles as well as position.
-
Maybe double Stop can be made to clear the bookmark on all selected items, not just the item playing.
-
If we had a [Played] checkbox field (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=80850.0) that you could simply deselect to clear bookmarks, that might work well.
-
Something like a double stop is what I'm after, although I agree with Matt's soon-to-come response that we don't want to clutter up the start/stop button functionality. Some way to clear or reset the bookmark quickly and easily, without having to show the bookmark field and do a rename/clear.
As far as a "[Played] checkbox field", I understand this less than I do the discrete mutterings of the bookmark field, which as Matt says were intended for DVDs and not me.
Finally, Matt's response seems to be consoling me for not being able to read and understand the bookmark field. For this I blame my off-hand comment, "I tried". Yes, Matt, I did try once, but I assure you the pain of failure did not last nearly as long as the hangover.

Maybe a ctrl-stop would work.

This is what I mean:

But "Played" and "Currently In Progress" (a bookmark) are two different states. Played in MC is generally something >50%, where as Currently In Progress can be anywhere in the duration.

Ctrl/Stop works for me.
Er, I didn't mean to say that it's currently working.

OK "Currently In Progress" or "Bookmarked" then? The name isn't really what is important, but it was just another thing where a checkbox field for boolean results could be useful - especially if the expression behind it could just be isempty([Bookmark],0)
Personally I would want something that clears both the bookmark and watched status—if I'm rewatching a TV series, I want to be able to track my progress through it.

Come to think of it, Ctrl/Stop isn't going to work, JimH, at least not for the issue I'm griping about.
The issue is that if I stop playback of an ifo video too close to the end of the video, I cannot play that video again until I clear the bookmark field. The problem is that if I click play, it will start, skip to the bookmark (all typical), and then bounce to the next item in PN (because it was almost finished anyway), and I cannot stop it from doing this without clearing the bookmark field.
Once it moves to the next item, one would hope that the bookmark would automatically return to reference the start of the video, but it doesn't.
If I let a video play completely through the end credits (something I never have the patience for), it works fine and the bookmark is updated correctly.
-
Right.
And also:
Watched = f([bookmark], [# plays])
so a simple binary checkbox might not cut it.
-
If you want to clear the bookmark tag, you can set the Use Bookmark tag to No and start playback. If you want to continue to use bookmarks for that video then reset the tag to Default.
-
Bookmarks are useful; I just want to be able to clear them easily.

Is this why bookmarking never works for DVDs, between MC sessions? Would be nice if it did.
Ctrl/stop sounds good.

It should work (and always has for me).
You might start a thread on it if you'd like to chase it.

If you are using a remote control?
