Title: Advice for a hot swap rack?
Post by: Arindelle on September 05, 2013, 12:09:18 pm
Need some more input ;) I want to buy what I guess is called a rack to put in a single bay in the front of my PC. I'd prefer that it doesn't have a fan nor need a drawer.

Just for info, all I want to do is archive a 3TB drive once or twice a month as my backups are in the same machine. The rest of the time the rack would be empty, and hopefully not powered up. Can't see any need for hot swapping but I really have never used these things before

Any good brands to look for? Any thing I should know about using a rack ?

Thanks in advance!

I use a simple, cheap Thermaltake BlacX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153066).  But maybe you want USB 3 (http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/ttWWW/Products.aspx?C=1346)?

I like the ones that mount in a 5.25" slot and have a door on the front and connect with SATA.  This way, you get full performance, easy swapping, and don't have an extra thing sitting around.

They're like $20 at Microcenter.  There are no real electronics inside, so any brand would probably be fine.

I use this one for $25 and it's USB 3.0 & 2.0.
