Title: Two 7.1 sound cards = 8 stereo zones?

If I build a media center PC with two 7.1 sound cards, am I correct that I can have up to eight stereo zones?  I want to have at most two sources, one playing to six zones, one playing to the remaining two, with volume being independently adjustable.

Any hardware recommendations for sound cards?
