Title: POLL: Would you buy an Early Bird version of JRiver Media Center for Linux?
Post by: JimH on September 18, 2013, 03:27:09 pm
We've been porting to Linux and we should have an early, very rough version available next month.  The process will be similar to the one we've had with Mac.  The first version will be audio only, and will include networking and support for remote software like JRemote and Gizmo.

We're planning to do a special half price offer in the next week or two, so watch for the newsletter if you're interested.

We ran a similar poll a couple of versions ago:

and a poll on Mac around the same time:

I might pay to support development. I don't have a test PC anymore so I doubt I would actually run it until it was fairly feature rich and stable unless it came included in a live CD.

Yep. Sure would. I don't have a spare PC to run it on at the moment, bit definitely buy it to support the development as want to move the bedroom PC to Linux in next few months

Yes, I will probably buy a copy.  A couple of thoughts, since it is 'very rough' maybe offer it as a free trial for a couple of months to get help sorting out the bugs and then go live and charge for it when it is more finished.  Also, I dual boot my PC with windows and Ubuntu.  I suspect others do something similar.  You might want to consider a multiplatform discount.  Good luck, looking forward to giving it a try.

this is incredible news for me, given that J river is the last Windows software I use. (I'm a ubuntu / android guy). I only really use J River for music, and I use Gizmo and web remote extensively so it seems like you're hitting my personal sweet spot.

I'll be an early adopter, especially if I can get a half price version early on.

I'll be running J River on an old eeepc 1000, as I do (amazingly) the Windows version, so my results would be fairly worst case scenarios, which is probably good for testing. If it works out well, I'll be switching to a Raspberry PI.

I'd like to have both Win/Linux versions, perhaps there could be a "deal" for multi-platform license?

Is it too soon to start questioning how things might work (HDMI audio, Red October (obviously sans DirectShow), etc.)?

Will MC media server run on it? And if so, would it serve video to a Windows client, even if it couldn't play it itself? I'm definitely in, if the early version can do that.

Great! In that case:
Yes.  Maybe. :)

Yep. Count me in. The day I can get rid of windows on my HTPC can't come soon enough... And the day I can run it as a server / transcoder on my headless Ubuntu server, even better :-D

I think you should work on the Mac version and give it the same (or almost the same) features like the win version, and then do the linux version. My fear is the mac version will be slow on features or updates if you start working on linux

I think eventually they will all converge, so while this may be a problem initially I can't imagine it being so indefinitely. Plus, there are far more Windows users that would be affected by focus being placed on Linux than Mac users...

Not saying Mac is any less important, just saying how it is.

I appreciate that it's a long long way away, but if a Synology version was available (Server) then I would jump at it.

+1 for a multi-platform license.
Don't want to pay full price for a product which I own already.

Do you know which flavor of Linux it uses?  It doesn't say here:

What Type of Linux is on my Synology (http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=60964)

I would deffinately buy an early bird version that was compatible with a Linux based NAS

I voted Maybe. I've already got a small, silent Windows PC for my MC installation, no point in wiping that for a Linux desktop version. Like others, I'm after a headless server version that can run on a Synology NAS, so maybe in the future, or if I decide on another PC for another room but no plans for that at the moment. Definitely not going to buy an early bird licence now, I've got nothing to run it on!

So do I understand that the Linux version would NOT run on a Synology NAS?   Unexpected (at least for me).

As others have mentioned.  I have a Synology NAS, I'd definitely purchase it if I could run it headless on my NAS.  I want to have all my files and data there, with all the other devices pulling from it.

For that matter, it would be interesting to see how many people would be interested in a purely headless linux version.  Just in terms of cutting things out of an initial version.

+1 for Synology Support.  Basically people would need an installable package (ideally through the Synology package discovery system)

It's unknown at this time.

I imagine the issue with Synology hardware is that they run their own flavour of Linux, seemingly not related to Debian, RedHat, Arch or any of the other major base distros.

Not sure Jim. Some info on 3rd party apps is available http://www.synology.com/support/3rd_party_app_int.php?lang=enu (http://www.synology.com/support/3rd_party_app_int.php?lang=enu)

My NAS is Intel ATOM based *1513+". I've asked the folks in the Synology forum your question so will get back when I have an answer.

Jim has said they are building it on Debian, but should work across the board.

I would buy it if it could run on my Synology NAS with Library server serving video and audio.

Yep.
I just did.

You guys are amazing! Not only Mac but now Linux!
I'm happy to buy at that price, just as part of crowd funding the development, even if there's then an upgrade soon after stabilisation.

I've been using MJ/MC for years, and really missed it when I migrated most of my activities to Linux a couple of years ago. PC MC wouldn't run properly for me in VirtualBox, either, because of audio streaming issues. The various open source tools just don't cut it after using MC features like extended metadata and stacks to manage the library presentation of multiple formats of the same item.

I can see the pathway to managing a single Linux library/database, with replicas on my travel/work Mac and elsewhere!

Thanks again,
Brian

Just bought the Linux license. I've been using a TechNet Subscription for my PC's / server at home, but this will expire next year, so experimenting with Linux. FreeNAS looks great (although its FreeBSD based so unlikely to work with MC19 Linux as I understand it) but also running Ubuntu Studio which is a great platform for media creation and looks like it will tie in nicely with MC19 on Linux. Thanks for all your continued efforts guys.  :)

¡Excellent idea!

I am not a Linux user, but am planning to become one. I am fed up with Windows: it's getting way too big, way too heavy, requiring every time bigger computers, while my needs have not really changed in the last few years, and might be fully covered by a much lighter platform. In a word, the business model of Microsoft ( or Apple...) is their problem, not mine!

That said, moving JRiver to Linux looses much of its interest if video is not covered. There are other nice free solutions for audio for both Windows and Linux. Personnaly, as a Windows users, i purchased JRiver strictly because of video, while my needs for audio were fully covered by Foobar.

By the way, support of ARM cpus would be also a major plus: what i want is a LIGHT platform, both from the soft and hard point of views: No more big OS nor big computers. ;)

I'd be interested in a (server?) version for the new QNAP (v.4) firmware.
