Once having changed the view to something that takes up the entire user interface, I am unable to get back to the basic view with an explorer-like left-side view (with audio, playlists, devices, et cetera) without having to close MC and reopen the program.

How does one navigate back to this basic view?

Look for the little triangles at the left edge of the window and click them.

... or... if you've gone into 'Cover View', press Ctrl+1 to get back to standard view.
