Title: NEW: Updated artwork (high resolution enabled)
Post by: Matt on November 26, 2013, 03:46:07 pm
Media Center 19.0.82 and newer switches the artwork in the program to an updated look.

This includes the tree icons, view header images, blank thumbnail images, options icons, and several other pieces of artwork.

The new artwork is high resolution, normally 4x the old artwork.  This means it will still look nice if you use View > Size to pick a big size in the program for readability or your high DPI display.  This artwork will also help when we add Apple Retina at a later date.

Thanks to Johanne, our long-time, and extremely talented, graphic designer.

Like the iOS 7 icons, I have mixed feelings about a few of these.  I do think they look a tinsy bit out-of-place in Noire.  Not over-the-top in any way, but the colors are pretty saturated where everything else in Noire is muted.  When they're used in B&W only mode (like in the top-or-bottom toolbars, for example), they're fantastic though.  And, it might just take another week or two to "get used to them" (you know, change is baaaaad).

Overall, though, I think they're a nice change.  Good work, Johanne!

.....did someone say   Apple retina support   ?

Never mind. I keep thinking Retina = iPad. I get it now.

....as you were....

Maybe a good time to add the option of an "Open Live" toolbar button.

+1

I've made a fake one by adding an "Open URL" button to the toolbar using the "customize toolbar" menu option.  It'll always open the dialog with the last entered URL, so I have it set to "live://loopback".  But that isn't perfect and takes two clicks.  It'd be great to have an open live (or dedicated loopback) button.

I like the new buttons quite a lot in Noire.  And they scale beautifully.

You could also add a Car Radio button.

I heard a rumor that you may not need live://loopback all that much longer ;)

In general the new artwork looks nice(r) however not every single icon works for me better than the old one. Is there a way to revert to (some of) the old ones? I especially would really like to have back the non-cover-art icon for music album - mainly because of the framing (see the attached screenshot)

I agree - framing would be nice to have when cover art is missing. The large icon on its own feels somewhat out of place among other cover art.

...also the (status of) check-boxes are rather hard to read now

A nice change, but the new play-buttons and so on are a bit to "3D" for my taste, and the close/minimize/fullscreen buttons are very fuzzy on my computer. Would it be an idea to make the graphics vectors, so they are scaled well in all resolutions, or is this not possible in windows?

...also the (status of) check-boxes are rather hard to read now

When projected with any room light they are impossible to read.

I guess you are using skins with dark backgrounds...

In previous MC versions the checkboxes in the "..\Default Art\SmallIcons.png" had a light-colored background,
so they where visible on skins with light and dark backgrounds. Now these checkboxes are only thin black frames
without background, so they vanish on dark skins. I think this should be changed and it would also help to make
these checkboxes a little bit larger (more the same size as the other "SmallIcons"). There are also other tranparent
icons inside that file that may cause similar problems. The designer should take a look  ;)

IMHO Gizmo really needs a bit of a visual make over: for example the << || > >> icons are starting to look a bit furry...

Gizmo recently got a set of new icons; http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85766.0
Its not in the Play Store yet though.

More UI improvements specifically to the Playing Now page are planned as well.

A fix for the readability of checkboxes is coming soon.

When I read "artwork" in the title, I was kinda sorta expecting to see maybe some screen prints of the new interface? Where can I see those?

Right now, I'm happy with MC18 (more or less), but am fully prepared to be dazzled ... long as it's not furry or hard to read ... I use the "blue steel" skin if that makes any difference.

(furry??)

My only real issue with buttons is the volume slider. Either it, or I, am too twitchy, and I find it hard to dial in on a specific setting. Twere me, I'd just have UP/DOWN arrows either side of a number and leave it at that. Hold down for fast scroll, click for single digit changes.

But, I expect that's another topic, so forget I mentioned it. <G>

You can use the scroll wheel on those types of control, if it helps.
