Is it possible to place your own backdrops in while playing music in theater view? How about adding additional sources for backdrops?

You could upload them to HT Backdrops. 

To control where MC pulls the images from, go to Tools -> Options -> Theater View -> Appearance -> Theme -> Online media sideshow.
I don't think it is possible to add additional sources though.  I may be wrong.

Another option to display your own images is to create your own Slideshow.

I'm pretty sure you can add your own files, but I don't remember how, and couldn't find a relevant thread when I looked (very briefly).

Try searching.  There might be a way.

I don't know if you can add your own online sources though.  I'm more skeptical on that.
