Title: Which version of Windows?
Post by: sicofante on December 25, 2013, 02:35:29 am
What's the best Windows version to run JRiver MC? I'm building a new PC and I want to buy the best possible version for it. I understand it will be either Win 7 or Win 8 and no business, pro or ultimate version is needed, but a recommendation from knowledgeable people will be very appreciated.

TIA

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit or Windows 8.1. It all comes down to ease of use - if you want the start menu without adding a third-party add-on, use Windows 7. However, if you don't mind the Windows 8 start screen, go Windows 8.

I might be dreaming but I've noticed a definite improvement for network file transfers using Win 8 / 8.1.

Win 7 was noticeably slower. I've observed (qualitatively anyway) up to a 6x speed improvement.

If you don't have a need to copy files to a NAS, then go either or.

Media Center is a 32-bit app so 64-bit Win won't help there.
But 64-bit Windows make a worthwhile difference for the video card, network driver, and hard drives if you use SATA6 and 7200 rpm fast drives or SSD as boot drive.
So yes, install 64-bit for sure. Win8.1 is better for HTPC than Win7, but only a little bit better.
