Title: Duplicates and Meta-Data Lookup's
Post by: TRT on January 21, 2014, 08:18:03 am
When I started ripping disc, most of the time no tracks were displayed.  When I tried to acquire them on-line, duplicate cover-art was displayed and tracks that were found went into the seperate cover-art.  Is there a way to merge them?  Also, 95% of my disc don't load tracks even though the cover-art is found.  Am I doing something wrong when I rip the disc?  Do I have to manually type in each track?  We're talking thousands of CD's so any help would be appreciated.  My Escient acquired every disc, but I'm trying to get away from the changer technology of the past.

It sounds like you're saying that when you insert a CD in order to rip the tracks, your are not seeing track info (metadata) for the disc and tracks, correct?

If so, it might be that your firewall is blocking MC from doing the CD info lookup.  Try disabling it temporarily to test.

I thought about the firewall theory, but metadata does load up on one out of fifty.  I'll try it anyway!

CD metadata look-ups are first performed against JRiver's YADB, and if no results are found, freedb is used.  Are your problematic CDs rare or fringe?

No.  The metadata usually finds the coverart, just not the track information.

Can you name a few Album / Artists for which track info is not found?

Every hall of fame jazz artist, every hall of fame R &B-Soul artist, Movie Soundtracks, and everything in between.  Software didn't recognize Pucinni---Mile Davis---Theloneous Monk---John Coltrane---Michael Jackson.  It finds the coverart 99% of the time.  The "Disc not recognized box pops-up 99% of the time.  Movies are a different thing.  It finds 99.9% of the movies.

Try Enabling logging, under Help > Logging > Output to a log file.

Then, insert a well-known CD and then force a look-up by going to Drives & Devices, right-clicking the drive, and using Update from Online Database.  If you get no results, try one more popular CD.

Then disable logging, and go to:

   C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 19

and copy the log file and attach it with a reply.

Wilco

Enabling Logging didn't work, so on to step two.  Here we go!

The log is more than 1200 characters, so I'll have to try something different.

That's like 1/1000th of the log so far.  Let me know if you need more or anything that can help me.  Thanks Mr. C!

When comparing your logs against mine, I see your CD look-ups return in 0ms, which seems to indicate auto-look-ups are disabled.

What are you settings under each of these?

Tools > Options > CD, DVD & BD > Auto Rip CD Database Lookup Options
Tools > Options > CD, DVD & BD > AutoPlay > Audio CD

Also, what happens when you go to Drives & Devices, select the inserted disc, right-click, and do Update from Online Database?

If multiple matches are found, chose the first one is the only box not checked.
Autoplay set to CD.

The right-click option didn't work for lookups.

You may have to install Fiddler2 to see what is happening with the web request to JRiver's servers.  When installed, and capturing traffic, and you do an Update from Online Database, you should see a line in the output to the host www.yadb.com, and the URL cgi-bin/CDLookup.cgi...

A successful connect will return a result of 200, and the lower right section in TextView mode will show the results.

If you get no response, or a 4xx or 5xx response, then something has blocked or interfered with the traffic.

If you're not sure what to do with this info, you could select all but the single line to www.yadb.com, and Delete.  Then, save the single request by doing a Save > Selected Sessions > in ArchiveZip... and save the file.  You can either attach it here, or email it to me (I'll PM you my email).  There's nothing confidential in that single request.

TRT - I have a tip (http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f11-software/j-river-tips-and-techniques-user-experiences-repository-13684/#post228643) I can send you on how to also search Gracenote and FreeDB within MC. I see that MC now does FreeDB though, not sure that was always the case.

Mr. C - Hi! Would there be any way to make cover art lookups use fuzzier logic without overloading results? Often times, and I try to avoid this, Album field has some tidbit, however miunute, that kills any results.. E.g. Nat King Cole At The Sand (24-96)

It's a shame, just thought I'd ask. cheers

I wish CD and Cover Art were first automatic in MC, and then on failure, would present a dialog of approximate matches, and the ability to adjust the query.  Like the TV and movie look up dialog.

That would be nice.

MC has used FreeDB for several years, whenever YADB returns no results.
