Post by: Jodd on January 30, 2014, 06:59:02 pm
Win 7 environment -
I put a standard music CD in the drive, and it automatically begins
a process that says "extracting" and then tries to remove and reinstall MC?
I am new to MC but this cant be normal.
Please help

It probably means an update occurred in the background.  OK to let it continue.

MC's messaging for the AutoUpdater could use a touch of work.  You know, if there was messaging, would be a good start.   ;)

But, yes, I'm sure this is what it was.  MC updates itself when new builds are released.  You can configure this in the options, and turn it off or set it to different "channels" (looked at one way, corresponding to how often you want it to bug you).  It downloads them in the background when running, and offers to install it with a restart.  But this message is in the Action Window so it can be ignored.  But if you close MC, then next time you launch it, it prompts for the update.

I think I've suggested before that MC only auto-update on new launches when that launch isn't "special", like going directly into Theater View explicitly with a command line option, for example.  And this would be another good case where it should never do this.

Thanks for your responses. I'll buy it, and the fact that inserting the CD was
just a coincidence. But yes, the timing of an extraction process starting
exactly when the disk was inserted certainly was off-putting. So at
a minimum please clean up the language, if not the timing.

It wasn't a coincidence.

MC is (probably) registered to handle CD playback via Windows's AutoRun feature.
MC had a pending update.
MC was not currently already running in the background.
Inserting the disc caused Windows to launch MC (so that it could handle the disc).
So, MC did the pending update before launching.

Plus, if I'm not mistaken, the fact that MC does the auto-update routine makes it "forget" what it was supposed to be doing in the first place (the original command line options aren't preserved). So when it does eventually launch after the update, it doesn't even actually do what it was originally supposed to do.

I'll have to re-test it to be sure, but I know it was this way a while ago, at least with launching directly to Theater View via:
mc19.exe /Mode Theater
