I want to run a minimal core Server 2012 R2 audio PC and network the media to it from a "control PC" using JRiver on both machines using Dnla.
I was told that using DNLA is a poor choice for high end audio.
Can anyone elaborate?

So...I have MC setup on my netbook with my external USB library for server/control...
My HTPC is tweaked with CAD script, desktop and shell killer scripts as the renderer...
Sound quality is as good as playing locally in renderer....
But according to certain others (Audiophile Optimizer guru), Dnla is NOT the way to go...
He advocates a 2 PC setup using jplay as the streaming interface, and of course, his 100ę optimizer scripts.
I personally think both pieces of software are, well, "fish oil" voodoo.
I'm thinking of doing a dual boot 2012 R2 setup...one version tweaked and installed then converted to "core" edition for running DNLA renderer from.

Your guru is wrong. DLNA just plays the file requested. If conversion is set on the DLNA server, it could convert to lower quality. Otherwise, you're playing whatever the source file is.
"fish oil" is a nice word for jplay.

Is there a way in jriver to use Dnla thru cat5/6, from control to renderer directly...?
-
It's DLNA, not Dnla. There is a topic on our wiki that explains what it is and how to get started.

You might be better asking the person who told you this! They've obviously got opinions on it.
As far as I'm concerned, DLNA is completely dependant on the renderer hardware. There's no inherent problem with the protocol itself with regard to audio quality.

And they also have something to sell!!! So pardon me if I seek out other opinions on it...

You can play from MC's DLNA Server to a DLNA Renderer.
