Title: MC 19 install fails [Solved]
Post by: TBoyInPuna on March 21, 2014, 05:07:00 pm
I am trying to install MC 19 on a new W8 laptop.  The install is failing.

When I launch the installer it extracts and the wizard starts.  Then, after accepting the terms and specifying an 'express' install, I get a pop up window that says

"Failed to load file associations file.  This is a fatal error, so the program must close.  Please reinstall the latest version of the program to fix this problem.

Path:

Version: Unknown"

I tried to install MC 18 and its install failed in the same way.

Please provide any help that you can.

Thanks,
Travis

Any antivirus program installed?

I agree with Jim.  That sounds like some Security application (or malware, perhaps, though sometimes those are the same thing) is preventing MC from being able to even load its file type associations file.  Perhaps in some misguided attempt to prevent rogue applications from stealing file type associations, or something.

In any case, that's where I'd look first.  What security software do you have installed?

Thank you for your responses.

I am using the McAfee trial that came with the new W8 laptop.  I turned both real-time scanning and the firewall off and tried the MMC 19 install again.  I got the same result.

What else might I try?

Uninstall McAfee.

I uninstalled McAfee.  I get the same result.

I uninstalled Prey.  I get the same result.

I scoured the event logs, and I did not see any entries that match up with the install failure.

Any ideas for something else to look for?

I resolved this problem.

I navigated Windows Explorer to %appdata% and renamed the the "J River" folder to "J River_Old".

After I did this it installed just fine.

This is the first time I've had a problem with this software that I couldn't solve readily.

I am concerned about support for this product.  What would have happened if I hadn't been able to figure it out?  Is there truly nowhere to turn besides this forum?

I don't think you were seeing a problem with MC.  It seems lie a Windows problem.

It was a problem of my own making, as so many times is the case.  I had initiated a restore from a backup that partially populated the %APPDATA% world.  It caused problems (with differing symptoms) in three different applications.

One of the applications that was affected was Rhapsody.  I contacted their tech support and they suggested renaming the folder for Rhapsody in %APPDATA%, which fixed the problem.

Restore of what?

For the record, a manual uninstall of all locations (AppData is the primary thing the uninstaller leaves behind, along with a few license-related Registry keys) was going to be my next suggestion, but you figured it out before I got there.

Unlike other software-support forums you may have encountered, this forum is actively monitored by JRiver staff (JimH is the CEO and founder of the company), and this is a fantastic place to get support in many cases.  There is also decent information available in the Troubleshooting Guide on the wiki (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Guide) (though it needs additional information added, like manual uninstall instructions, the basics are very good).

Restore of what?

Restore of a backup, referenced above.  I assume he did a partial backup restore, which left half-way written files all over the place in critical locations like AppData.

He says backup, but I don't know if he means a backup of MC or Windows or something else.  Some details would be helpful.

I'd assume it is a Windows backup of some kind, not anything MC related, since it broke other unrelated applications too.  However, it is somewhat irrelevant since his issue is solved.

But if you just want to know if the backup system went haywire, it might be useful to have a definitive answer.  I'd be extremely surprised if so, though.

Hello, sorry for the delay.

It was a file backup from the computer that is being replaced.  I started the restore operation, then changed strategies and aborted it.
