Title: Playlist>JRiver Mac>PSAudio Perfectwave DAC Bridge SQ issue
Post by: gocubs42 on May 03, 2014, 08:13:22 am
Playing playlist containing JazzRadio channels and various radio stations, from MAC JRiver via DLNA /Bridge Perfectwave DAC I notice the sound is compressed lifeless. Playing music files from my external drive connected to the Mac under the same scenario sounds wonderful. I moved the MAC connected to the Perfectwave via USB and using JRiver , Playlist containing JazzRadio channels and  stored radiostations sound wonderful. Has anyone else experienced this and have any thoughts on Playlist> JRiver MAC> Perfectwave DAC/ Bridge sound quality. The DLNA connection in JRiver was built by the wizard.

Is the audio being converted?

Look under Tools > Options > Media Network > Add or configure DLNA servers... select your server, and look under the Audio > and Audio > Format.

So to clarify:

  - sounds bad:   MC Mac > DLNA + DAC
  - sounds good: MC Mac > USB + DAC

What format / quality are the audio streams actually streaming?

That's correct:
 MP3 192

I'm not certain about how this works w/DLNA.  Bob or AndrewFG might be able to provide more clarification.

I don't know if the DLNA server just pushes that URL to the renderer (which would stream the URL itself), or if it has to decode/re-encode the stream.

The quality change would seem to suggest the latter.

Indeed. The mechanism is that the UPnP Control Point calls SetAvTransportUri on the render to pass the renderer a URI to play. If MC is the CP and the music is something on MC then the URI is a link to a streaming source on the MC server. But if MC is the CP and the music is somewhere else, then the URI is a link to whatever is the original source. This latter case is probably what is happening. So in other words the renderer is pulling the track direct from JazzRadio and the format is presumably the lowest common denominator of what JazzRadio thinks it can stream to what it considers to be an unknown renderer. So I don't think MC can influence the outcome in any way...
