More testing on the DAC. I was getting Pop/Clicks (about 50% of the time) when Switching Tracks if I used Standard (gapped), but when changing to Cross-fade (aggressive) the issue disappeared.
-
Sounds like your DAC clicking when playback starts/stops, which doesn't happen with cross-fade.
With all the issues you're having, you should return it. ::)
-
After some more testing,
- Standard (Gapped): The worst with lots of pops/click (say 50% of the time)
- Cross Fade (both aggressive and smooth) & Gapless: Better, but I still get the odd Pop/Click on track change using Cross-fade but it is far less prevalent (say 1 in 10)
- Gapped Fade: Best with No Pop/Clicks

Where would the "fun" in that be! It's more finding the happy settings I think (hope) ;D

Is your DAC playing from the Celeron NUC you reviewed here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=87617.0
Or from a different PC?

Does it happen only when changing sample rates or between all files? Many DACs make a pop or click when changing sample rates. I don't have mine on hand to test, but will report back on Monday if you haven't solved the issue.

Sorry I should have mentioned:
- PC: is not the NUC (i7 Box with a JMark around 4.5-5K)
More Testing (re across Sample Rates!):
- Standard (Gapped) & Gapless: The worst with lots of pops/click (say 50% of the time) even on the same sample rates
- Cross Fade (both aggressive and smooth) : Better, only happens between tracks with a change in sample rate
- Gapped Fade: Best with No Pop/Clicks even with change of sample rates

I would suggest to try changing the WASAPI buffer size, or the "play silence at startup" options to see if they help at all.
It sounds like it could be a hardware limitation, and the ODAC may not have the best USB implementation though.

Thanks - I had tried both of these and it did not make a difference. I'm happy with Gapped Fade, but there must be some tech difference from MC between the various Switch Track settings for a DAC to care.
-
I would assume that the difference is with the DAC playing silence or simply breaking the connection. (i.e. playing nothing)
I can't think of a reason why playing silence for all of these would be a bad thing.

That's mighty odd; I've had DACs that clicked on sample rate changes, but those DACs would click no matter which interstitial you chose. I will definitely be attempting to replicate this with my ODAC on Monday, it's truly bizarre (I use aggressive cross-fade or gapless, and haven't ever noticed any clicks, but I haven't been paying attention either).

The thing that makes me wonder about that is that it clicks on gapless or aggressive crossfade, where there is not likely to be a broken connection (i.e. no actual silence). It's a very strange result.

It's not a big issue as I don't normally change tracks (normal playback progression is fine) and the "Gapped Fade" option is perfectly fine. It will be interesting to see if you hear the same thing.

Got WASAPI Exclusive + Event Style Working which seems to have fixed the issue (but time will tell). More here (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=89230.msg613134#msg613134)

I posted the results of my testing over in the other thread for anyone following this issue: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=89230.msg613233#msg613233
