Title: How do I stream flac from PC over wifi to my stereo in best quality?
Post by: Ferdi on May 24, 2014, 12:09:04 am
First, apologies if that has been asked before. I've been looking for a while but am more confused than before  ?

Goal: stream flac from PC over wifi to my stereo in best quality. My wifi is set up through apple Airport Express (APE), which sits right next to the stereo. At the moment, APE and stereo are connected through analog connection.
I use JRemote to control music.

What confuses me most is the transmission of the music, and where it is converted into which format. As a result, I don't know how to optimize my music.
- does MC stream flac to APE?
- if yes, then I think that using the digital output of APE via toslink would be the right way to go, if I add a DAC between stereo and APE?
- if MC converts files before streaming to APE, does that mean I'd better be off with a DAC streamer? Would it then make to buy two separate units (dedicated streamer and DAC), or one single unit?
- what's JRemote's role in all of this, does it impact any file transformation?

Or am I missing something and this is all totally wrong way to go?

Thanks much for help!

What make / model is your stereo amp? Does it have any digital inputs? Does it have an ethernet or wifi connection?

It is an amp / pre-amp combo (Rotel), no digital input, wifi or Ethernet. It pre- dates the digital revolution by just a couple of years

I don't know about the audio quality of the airport express, but one suggestion might be to connect an rLink between the digital output of your airport express and the analog inputs of your amp ... http://www.arcam.co.uk/products,rSeries,Wired-DACs,rlink.htm

Or alternatively if you want a "one box solution" then something like the airLink could be the answer for you ... http://www.arcam.co.uk/products,rSeries,Wireless-DACs,airdac.htm

But in any case, do try before you buy.
