Title: 5.1 playback on PS3 DLNA via JRiver
Post by: jjfabbsy on June 27, 2014, 12:30:01 am
Hi,

I am wondering what settings I need to use on JRiver to output the original multichannel Dolby Digital or DTS streams on my PS3.

Right now, all my content is showing up on my Denon receiver as Stereo....but the PS3 is in Dolby Digital non-stop for every other application.

Thanks

Hi - does anyone have an answer on this?

I've asked the same question here and never got a response.

You can tell MC to decode files or you can "bitstream" to the device if it can decode them.

Correction.  I missed the "DLNA" part.  With DLNA, the file is given to the DLNA Renderer and it will decode if it can.

Thanks for the reply JimH

I've been having a play around, and have had good video results with the settings:

Mode: Specified output only when necessary
Format: H264-TS high bandwidth stream autofps

The "very high bandwith" option gives a data error on the PS3.

I have the audio settings set as

Mode: Original
Format: PCM L24 No Header

"Stereo Downmix" and "Volume Leveling" is unticked.

All my DD 5.1 and DTS content is showing up as 2 channel via this setting, mainly MKV's that I am viewing. I have also tested both the "Specified Output" options.

However a file I have in the TS format is able to stream to my PS3 as full 5.1

Is there a way we can work out why the TS is able to output as 5.1, and allow this to work with an MKV stream?

My CPU is quite fast, so happy if my server PC has to use a bit of grunt.

None of the transcoding settings currently do multichannel.
MC is transcoding the mkv because the PS3 can't play that container natively.
As a workaround you could pre-transcode the material to a container format the PS3 can handle so it doesn't need to transcode the material.

I suppose that at some point you will need to add this. I guess that DTS HD and DTS will be the formats of choice. But in my ProtocolInfo scanner I plan to export a log file so you guys can see what users devices most frequently report themselves as being capable of.

AC-3/DD would be the format of choice, since its the only popular consumer format that we have a widely available encoder for. There are no decent DTS encoders, not to mention any DTS-HD encoders at all, which are free to use and redistributable as part of MC.

Interesting. Does this lack of availability also apply to decoders? How would you play a Blu-ray with DTS HD audio? Do such disks also have parallel audio tracks in other formats?

At least plain DTS has wide decoding support, and support for DTS-HD is being worked on (or available with 3rd party components), so decoding is not a big problem.

Does version 20 have a fix for this problem? I have been trying to decide whether to purchase JRiver, but have held off for exactly this reason. PS3 media server and Universal Media server both allow for 5.1 and DTS audio to be streamed to the PS3 from an MKV container. Clearly, there is a way to do this. I would prefer using JRiver, but can't justify spending money on it until it does this one task I require.

The PS3 can't play mkv containers so they are re-muxing the material into something it can play.
I think that would be a good feature for MC 20 but it's not there at this time.

I hope this feature will come to MC20.

Was this ever resolved? I'm trying to stream 5.1 to my PS4 over DLNA but am only receiving a stereo down mix no matter what settings I use. UMS works with an issue, however.

In MC, on the server, you can set the conversion you want.  In this case, you don't want any.

Could you please download the DMRA test application from my sig, run it against your PS4, and post the test log results here?
