Can you write that again with a bit more explanation?
When you say filename the first time, do you mean the [Name] field as guessed by Carnac?
What do you mean by "original file"?

Imagine that we're 8 years old and have no telepathic abilities. Perhaps give us a step by step process of what you're doing and what's happening that is unsatisfactory.

there is Filename(Name) then Name

sometimes I download a free file and it has the title and the persons name on it and other bits like - . etc

I rename this removing all the dots and dashes then put it in my (say movies folder) when it imports into media centre The Filename (name) is ok but it is putting the original file name into the name field.

I do not know where it is getting this info.

The information might be in the tags built into the file, which MC is reading.
What you could do is go to the [Name] field and then press F2 or right click and choose rename.

Then type the following:
=[filename (name)]

That will copy what's in the filename to [Name] field.

You can also do this using the Move/Copy Fields tool.

The cool thing is that you can do this for all your files at once, as long as you've edited the filenames manually to what you want to call them.
