There has been an ongoing issue for a while, where there is a "pop" in each channel (with multi channel, you can hear it cycle quickly around the channels) when starting playback with a different PCM sample rate than the previous playlist. Will only occur when starting from stopped state. If you switch albums whilst playing between the same tracks, it is okay.
The intensity can vary between a small pop, to a "firecracker" crack.
Originally, I thought it might have been a driver/sound card issue, but it is consistant between sound card, USB DAC and even a Tascam USB powered DAC on another PC used as a headphone amp.
I have experimented with the play silence at startup audio options, but it does not help.

I have experimented with the play silence at startup audio options, but it does not help.
This is really the only work around:
Options > Audio > Play silence at startup for hardware synchronization
-
It's possible that both devices have the same problem.
I don't get any pops or clicks when switching between PCM formats on my Benchmark DAC2 via USB.
I do get pops when switching to/from DSD though, which according to Benchmark is not supposed to happen.

This was the culprit: Options > Audio > Play silence at startup for hardware synchronization. Setting this to none solved this issue on all 3 interfaces.

Well I would not have enabled it unless you required the setting to be on.
However it's very strange that this would cause the problem.
It seems like something which should be investigated.

spoke too soon - still get the occasional pop, but it seems to be less prominent.
