Title: Play/Pause when driving a squeezebox from jriver/gizmo
Post by: mattkhan on July 12, 2014, 02:14:48 pm
I have a few squeezeboxes around the house; a squeezebox boom as a portable & a squeezelite (software player) feeding speakers in my kitchen. JRiver sees these and can control them without issues except for one, pause is interpreted as stop so unpause means play from the beginning. Suffice to say this is not conducive to a game of musical statues or pass the parcel :)

Is this a common problem? Is there any solution short of buying new hardware?

It is probably not a problem with the one particular Squeezebox but rather something to do with the particular track you are trying to play on it. Some media formats and local files are seekable and pausable, whereas some other formats and also remote streamed files are not. The reason is that the Squeezebox system needs to know two out of the three variables: track duration (tag), file size, bit rate (tag or stream attribute), in order to calculate an offset position for seek and resume HTTP requests.

Right I see. All my music is stored as FLAC (though I'm not sure if that is what gets played by the device when controlled by jriver/gizmo). Should I expect this sort of problem with FLAC?

Flac can indeed be a bit difficult because there is never a clearly defined ratio between file size and track duration. Do you have this problem with all your Flacs or just some of them?

An alternative suggestion could be to disable the Logitech DLNA plugin and use Whitebear instead.

it is every FLAC I've tried so far but this is only about 10 tracks at this point. I'll try some different ones later

does it have to run on the same machine as LMS? I run LMS on a linux server rather than my jrmc htpc.

Yes Whitebear has to run on the same machine as LMS, and it is only a Windows app, so if you are on Linux, then Whitebear won't help you.
