Title: AMD R7 250 vs nVidia GTX 750 - madVR
Post by: pubare on July 12, 2014, 06:23:11 pm
Title says it pretty well...  I am looking for a replacement card for madVR performance ONLY (no gaming) and am not willing to use anything that uses greater than 65W of power (thermal / noise / space considerations).  Which pretty much means the R7 250 or GTX 750 series.  Which one typically does better with madVR performance?  Primary use is 720P DVD / 1080P BluRay rips (handbrake CQ = 18) to mkv.  CPU is Intel i5-4570 with HM-87 motherboard, 8GB low-latency RAM.  MC19 latest (as of today anyway) on Win7 x64.

Even though I own an AMD card (290X) my vote goes for the Nvidia 750 as the Maxwell architecture is quite impressive with its lower power usage and thermal output.

Sorry about making you move it Jim, wasn't paying attention when I posted.

According to renethex at the AVS forums, the 250X and the 750 are pretty equivalent in madVR.  So a 750 / 750ti will do much better than a "plain" 250.

Nvidia have much better hardware acceleration support than AMD.
AMD seem to have better performance when using the DirectCompute options in madVR (NNEDI3/Error Diffusion) but I don't know that it's significant with this level of GPU.

I'd probably go with the 750.
