Title: Issue when importing files with long filenames
Post by: DangerJP on July 30, 2014, 12:55:28 pm
Hi,

When I try to manually import files with long filenames (i.e., drag & drop folders in MC), some files are not imported in MC.

I suppose this occurs with file names >= 256 characters.

Would it be possible for MC to generate a warning message when this occurs ?

Thanks !

This is a Windows limitation, not a MC issue. You can use Bulk Rename Utility to shorten them to something <260 characters.

Thanks for the suggestion BryanC !

I was aware of the Windows issue.

However, sometimes I forget to check the file names prior to importing in MC.

For example, extracted .dsf files from a SACD .iso are usually created with super long filenames (i.e., something like [Track #] - [Album Artist] - [Composer] - [Work] - [Movement #] - [Movement].dsf).

It would be cool if MC could warn the user that those files can't be imported without renaming them.

The import summary will list filenames that are too long.

Thanks Matt !

I understand that this import summary is generated when using the ''Import'' command, but it seems that this summary is not generated when using a ''drag and drop folder''-style of import.

I think I will use the standard command from now on. I still think the summary should also be produced when drag and dropping files in MC, though.

Yes.  Drag-n-drop is a shortcut, and doesn't display the same information.
