Windows Instructions (http://wiki.JRiver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC20) Windows Upgrade Purchase (http://www.JRiver.com/purchase_20_as_upgrade.html)
Mac Instructions (http://wiki.JRiver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC20_for Mac)
Please use this thread if something doesn't work.
A few answers first:
1. MC20 builds are available on our Download Page (http://www.jriver.com/download.html).
2. If you bought MC19 after July 1, 2014, you received an MC20 license (Mac or PC).
3. An MC20 license will work with both MC20 and with recent builds of MC19.
4. You can retrieve your old license(s) by using option 2 on the Restore Page (https://rover.JRiver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi).
5. Mac and PC licenses are separate. You can upgrade from either by purchasing a Master License (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Master_License). It works with Windows, Mac, and Linux versions.

Pre-order Media Center 20 today and receive the best price of the year -- just $18.98.
Does this mean I can prepurchase MC 20 for $18,98 if I have no previous version? I tried via the program itself and opened a page that says "Media Center 20 Windows
JRiver, Inc. $49.98 "
How to get your "Best price of the year" deal value?
Thanks.
-
My question is, does the Purchase JRiver Media Center 20 as an Upgrade page work for just Windows or will it for Mac and Linux (when available) licenses too?
-

$18.98 is the upgrade price.
-
Roughly - how long before the special pre-order price is raised to the normal price ?
-
I believe August 10th.
-
That's correct.
-
nm, got it sorted
the key is delivered through the .mjr which is an installer, for those who might be curious
i had a software conflict as some of my work files use mjr but that's sorted now
-
Just bought the upgrade.
As MC19 is already installed on all my HTPCs, if I immediately run the new MC20 .mjr file on my actual MC19, will future installations of MC20 will already be registered or will I have to burn one of the 10 restore as MC20 becomes available (after 14 days) ?
Thank you to all the team, this is becoming an annual tradition :-)
-
When I buy the upgrade, do I install the MC20 licence into my current MC19 installations before MC20 is available?
If so, will MC19 upgrade itself to MC 20 via the normal "Help / Update Channels / Check for Updates" or the Automatic Update process, according to my "Update Channels" preferences?
EDIT: On re-reading, I guess my questions are similar to rudyrednose's. Mine are just simpler to understand! :P

When it's available, you'll just need to install it. It will use the license you installed for MC19.

When MC20 is available, just download and install it. It will find the license if you've installed it for MC19.

Hello,
This is not a question but I hope you will take consideration of my comment here below.
If possible starting MC 20 try to put out a "release" process separating "Beta" from "Release".
Way to often xx.0.1.xxx is fixing something not working out in previous xx.0.1.xxx. I know debugging with the users' help is an important part of the process for the product.
As I mentioned elsewhere for "add-on remote" :
Note : Your post July 06 requested Ver. 19.0.133 ---> Now July 25 Ver. 19.0.156
I'm skipping most "upgrades" because they do have not real "Stable" value. If, as often, old habits are too hard to shake and if I'm mistaken I'll gobble my post ;)
TC
-
MC already has 3 version channels, "Stable", "Latest" and "Beta". Latest is usually updated once a week or so, while Stable is updated far less often and only if no known problems exist. If you want that, just set MC to that as your update channel (which is the default as well).
Obviously there can be no guarantees that there will never be any problems in the "Stable" versions, but it should be far less than if you use "Latest" (or any version posted on the forum).
-
Thks Hendrik
I'll check the settings. My signature says it all ::)
-
Does this apply to owners of MC 18 also? Or is there a different price?
-
Does this apply to owners of MC 18 also? Or is there a different price?
The special upgrade price is available to every owner of MC back to version 10, so MC 18 is covered!
-
Upgraded!
Excellent early bird pricing!
-
I have upgraded to MC20....it's a no brainer IMO. However, is it possible that JRiver could be used with a non-JRiver Renderer (AURALiC ARIES) without the use of a computer? I just love JRiver and JRemote and would like to use it instead of their app. I think the market would be massive for this need. I currently use Minimserver to go along with their DS Lightning App but would love to replace all of that and just use JRiver/JRemote or even keep Minimserver and use JRiver/JRemote.
-
I own MC 17,18 and 19...where does one find the 'registration code'??
-
Please see the first post in this thread.
-
Do all settings and libraries transfer to MC 20 intact? When upgrading before, I seem to remember my main library being copied to a user folder somewhere instead of just staying in the desired directory it was in before upgrading.
-
Upgraded to MC 20. No issues with upgrade process.
And thanks for the special upgrade price :)
-
i read that you are working with the ponopeople.
i ordered a pono player and now i am asking if i have
to buy the new version here or it will be included
in the pono package?
-
I can't comment on what Pono will provide. It won't be identical.
-
Thanks for a great product. I have just bought MC19 and now faced with the upgrade to MC20 after 1 month. Before spending the $20 can you please at least make a list of the key changes and or new features that will be made available in MC20. The only issue raised on your 'change log' is something about JRiver requiring a simpler interface to the likes of Hulu and Netflix. A useful 'feature/service' would be for JRiver to provide a US based Hulu / Netflix proxy service which could be included in the annual 'licensing' charge!! I suppose another reason for the 'upgrade' is to continue receiving fixes.
-
:( . Oh I thought got a good deal.
As a matter of fact, MC is in any case a good deal :)
-
i read that you are working with the ponopeople.

If I had to guess, there probably won't be any video support in the Pono player.
-

We have an internal list of changes we'd like to make, but we haven't published anything yet.
-

Ditto. I just paid the price because I find many of the features of this media player (that I know about) are must haves and besides I really don't mind supporting software that is being actively improved from version to version, especially for this price. Looking forward to MC 20 for the song linking feature alone!
-
I am continually amazed at how many people will complain over $20 (cost of upgrade) but yet will spend insane amounts of money on silly things. Do you people have any idea how many hours are spent developing these tools? It's INSANE! Look at how many people Jim has and I'm sure he would like to have more. Personally, I'd rather pay $20 every year than a massive lump sum upfront for good. At least now, at any time you can opt out and not upgrade and what you have works until it's not supported anymore.
Keep up the great work JRiver!
-
Wow - in one year, JRiver Media Center will be able to drink legally ! ;D
-

Dito.
I did it, no question.
-
Web page refuses to recognize valid registration code for version 19 when I try to purchase upgrade. The registration info came straight from JRiver.
I'm stumped here. How can I go about buying the upgrade if wevsite won't recognize my registration code?

Make sure you're on the right page. Windows or Mac. There is a link at the top of the instructions page for both.

Thank you very much. You and others who feel similarly are inspiring for us. We're honored and grateful that you feel that way.

Same! As someone involved professionally in trying to get people to buy stuff my company sells, I am embarassed how quickly I hit the Purchase link .. but I really do want to support ongoing development. That's what I'm buying in to, not just the feature list :D

Hello Jim,
Would you mind shooting me an email when you have a spare moment? I have a couple of questions id feel more comfortable dicussing privately. [ removed ] Thank you in advance for the inconvenience.

We try to keep discussion public so that one answer can help many. Please ask here. But don't post your license.

I received an email about a special pre order price of $18.98 for V20. I click on the link in the email, .../upgrade to mc20 and it takes me to the “upgrade to mc20 page”, here it provides another link to the “download page” but the download here is for MC 19.0.146 (which I am already using) NOT 20 but seeing no other choice I click that link and it downloads ver 19.0.146. I am not asked for any payment info for version 20. I don't get it???
-
The latest available is currently MC19. MC20 builds will start to appear in a few weeks.
The MC20 license works with both MC19 and MC20.
-
so I will be asked for the $18.98 when 20 actually comes out?
-
Hi Guys, what is the release date for MC20 please? Tx

Development will happen over the next year. Your feedback is appreciated.
A first release will be available in a few weeks.
-

You can purchase an upgrade now for $18.98. The price is normally $26.98.
-
OK, just read the upgrade page and I am confused.
I own MC18 and, while I had considered upgrade to MC19, decided to wait for MC20. I read now that I need to purchase MC19.
Can you please be more specific as to what I need to do and purchase to get MC20. Please do not just refer me to the upgrade page as I find it very confusing. Hopefully I am not the "Lone Ranger" in this regard.
Thank you in advance.
Frank
-
You don't need to purchase MC19. You can buy an MC20 license as an upgrade from MC18. You can use that license with either MC19 or MC20 (when available).
Try reading the instructions again. Tell me what confused you if you can.
-
Upgraded.
Congratulations on another year of accomplishment despite adversity. Bravo! Looking forward to the next 12 months.
Question: I got a "license successfully installed" so that's good but is there a way to tell within MC19 that the newer license is there for the upcoming MC20? Just wondering (and always a bit paranoid when upgrading or installing anything! ;D).
-
Just checking before I update will the new builds of MC20 continue to support Windows XP and kernel streaming
No answer yet ?
I have been using your software since MC17 and it has worked perfectly playing flac files of CD rips and downloaded Hi Res files exclusively
If there is any doubt about supporting XP I will stick with MC19
Thanks for a truly great player :) :)

I have v.17. I'll purchase the v.20 upgrade.
But can I wait to download the v.20.1/2/3 version later?
-
If you follow the instructions in the first post, you can purchase now, but download later.
-
What's going to be the price for v.20 Linux (non-upgrade)?
-
We haven't set one yet. Sorry.

I clicked on the link to purchase the MC20 upgrade, received the Music Center 2.mjr file which I opened. Popup indicated license installed and received email with new Registration Code. When I open MC and check on updates, system indicates that latest version is installed but it is 18.0.212, not 19 (or 20 which I understand is a coming attraction).
How do I get system to install MC19?

Download MC19 from the message at the top of the forum. Or on the download page of the main page (the download link above).

Couldn't agree more. Here in the UK the upgrade is £11. That's a couple of beers in the pub or less than one High Res download. One can't complain about that for a quality product. What's more, thank you JRiver for letting us Limies purchase at the same price; traditionally we are faced with an 'exchange rate' for software of $1 = £1 - a tradition started in Redmond may be?
-
Hi,
Great news!
I have just bought an upgrade using my MC19 Windows key. Do I need to purchase a separate upgrade key för my MC19 Mac or will one upgrade fee cover both?
I don't have a problem with paying separately for both, I just need to know before a purchase another upgrade. :)
Thanks.
/Carl

They are separate licenses. Thanks.

Please use this thread if something doesn't work.
A few answers first:
1. MC20 builds aren't available yet, but will be in a few weeks.
2. Anyone who bought MC19 after July 1, 2014, has received an MC20 license (Mac or PC).
3. An MC20 license will work with both MC20 (when it appears) and with recent builds of MC19.
4. You can retrieve your old license(s) by using option 2 on the Restore Page (https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi).
5. Mac and PC licenses are separate. One cannot be upgrade to the other.
I have MC18 and just received a mail offering me an upgrade to MC20 for $18.98. I went to take up the offer but was told I need to have MC19 installed prior to upgrading to MC20. To do this I would have purchase the upgrade of MC19 for something like $26.00. This would them make the upgrade from MC18 to MC20 cost over $40.00. Am I missing something or this mail deliberately misleading?

Hi
I would like to pre-order Media Centre 20 for the Mac - I have bought MC 19 for Windows. Please can you tell me how to do that - it does not working the upgrading area by putting my windows registration number in,
Thanks

I currently own MC18, want to upgrade to MC20, the instructions are very confusing, you really need to over haul the upgrade process, it is so confusing that I am just going to stay with MC18 I guess.

It isn't helpful to say it is confusing without explaining what is confusing.
If you own MC18, and already have it installed, the process is very simple.
Download MC19. Install it. From within the program, go to the Help menu and choose the item to Purchase a License. This will open a Web page in your default registered browser on the system. When you install MC19 with a licensed copy of MC18 already installed, it'll detect that and offer you the upgrade pricing. Buy it.
What part, specifically, isn't working?
-
Going to go ahead and install the upgrade... Two questions
1) I have JRiver 19 on two computers. I'll make the purchase from this one so how will I install 20 on the other computer?
2) Will it affect the JRemote app I use with my Iphone?
-
I am a registered owner of MC19. MC19 registration info says I am registered and I have the printed version of the confirmation (buy button) of my registration code. I have tried to upgrade to MC20 unsuccessfully It says my registration code is invalid. I tried to restore my license but got the error that there was no registration code for that email address. I tried reactivating my license but got the message that it was invalid. I double and triple checked that I entered the correct code but am still unable to purchase the upgrade. Can someone please help me figure out what I am doing wrong or what it is I need to do to get my registration code recognized. Thanks in advance.

Enter your MC18 registration code, and it should give you the proper upgrade pricing.

Hi All:
Just purchased Upgrade License for MC20. A file was downloaded "Media Centre20 Windows-261046.exe". When I run this file I get the following error message:-

This version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running. Check your computer's system info to see whether you need an x86 or x64 version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.
Unquote.
I running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit... and I am running ver MC 19.0.161. So what's the fix here?

I have version 17 bought the version 20 upgrade and got a temporary version 18 registration code to install first. I installed that okay but when I try to upgrade to version 20 I get "error restoring Media Center license. Unkown error"

I own a licence for Media Centre 19 and have recently upgraded to Media Centre 20 and have opened the mc20.mjr license file from within Media Centre 19. Now as it appears the first public release of MC 20 is several months away yet, is it safe to assume that the license file I've opened within MC 19 will carry over to MC 20 when it's available or will I need to reqest a new 14 day license key?
-
It should just work.

Hi Chaps,
Strange one, when paying with PayPal, its taking me to a default paypal login page I use to view my paypal account, not a page to pay for the product. Is there a manual way to pay for this with paypal, or can the paypal process on the site be fixed please?
Many thanks,
Ben

tried again and got through to the payments screen, but after I click on PayNow (after logging into my paypal account) I get this error...

That may be a Paypal problem with your account. Paypal has been working very well for other purchases.

You might try a different browser.

Cheers Jim,

Since I use a Windows box to host my local media (stored on my NAS) and a Mac laptop to access it throughout my home and while I'm away, I've had to purchase two (2) upgrades @ $18.98 each. Can you please re-examine your licensing model to address this? Please???

Dear all,
I'm a very content user of the MC 17, which I use solely for audio replay (flac and aif). An upgrade to MC 20 would be appealing for me, if its sonic qualities were superior to those of the MC 17.
Thus I may put forward my question: are there any sonic improvements to the decoders and/or otherwise relevant program features?
Any helpful answer is very much appreciated.

Hi, I'm interested in upgrading, but only just returned from vacation, where I had no internet access. Is there a way I can get the special upgrade pricing still?
Thanks!

The upgrade price is still good, but will be changed at the end of the day (US CDT).

Yes - "If you purchased MC19 after July 1, 2014, you received an MC20 license that will work with both versions."
-
Cool, thank you.

So what gives on a new purchase per the special offer price of $39.98??? this thread has an earlier post that says the special pricing ended on 8/10. But I have an e-mail dated 8/12/14 (see below) saying that the special offer ends this coming Sunday, which would be 8/17. When I download a new Windows install on a different machine that my original trial, it says the price is $49.98. And when I try to upgrade from my expired trial install, it says the version is no longer supported & to do a new download.
You may have a great product (I haven't tried it that much yet), but I hope you are not doing a bait & switch on the e-mails. Either way this special offer process is rather crappy and has wasted more of my time that the $10 off is worth, if I even get that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So I went ahead & purchased thinking that maybe the discount would apply as part of a final process. But no, from all I can see I was charged the full price of $49.98. This sure looks like bait & switch so far & I'm, not happy about this or definitely all the hassle.

I paid the $21 upgrade fee for MC20, but prefer to let it season a bit out in the market before downloading. Is there a time limit as to when I can download the upgrade?

There is no limit on downloading.

Both MC19 and MC20 will work with an MC20 license. All licenses sold since July 1 are MC20 licenses.

Jim has said previously that "fair use" is acceptable. At the time I think he was answering a question about installing one MC licence, of the same type (i.e. Windows) on all PCs in the house, or that you own, is acceptable within reason. I think he said three or five PCs maximum. I can't find the relevant post with search.
So yes, you can install MC19 on your laptop and MC20 on your desktop, or visa versa if you like. You can control which version is installed on each PC. But why not install MC20 on both?
EDIT: Here it is.

Quote:
"You must have the correct version of MC installed first. Your license must be for the correct OS type (Windows, Mac or Linux). Each Install Key (mjr file) is good for 14 days.
You can Restore your license, and generate another Install Key up to ten times per rolling calendar year. "
My question (14 X 10 = 140 days), is that the validity of the licence I am going to buy?
? :-\
-
The Registration Code is permanent. It will work forever. Only the Install Key is limited.
-
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I know that the Registration Code is permanent. but as it is written the
code is valid 140 days within the year.
Am I right?
-
Am I right?
No.
The Install Key is used to install a licence. Installation creates the Registration Code. If you buy the software and receive an Install Key on the third of the month you have until the seventeenth of the month to install the licence, or you will need a new Install Key, which you get by following the Licence Restore process.
If in the future your house burns down with your PC inside, when you get around to wanting to install MC on a new PC you will need to follow the Licence Restore process to get a new Install Key, which you will then need to use within 14 days or it will expire.
Simple really.

OK
Should be clear!
Let's suppose virus attack instead " house burns " :o

Is there still an option for discounted uprade from version 19?
How much is it to upgrade to version 20?
Thanks, Thomas
-
It's $26.98.

Just checking before I update will the new builds of MC20 continue to support Windows XP and kernel streaming
It should continue. We have no plans of removing XP support.

I just reinstalled Windows 7 and installed MC20, taking this as an opportunity to upgrade. I have a MC19 registration, and would like to upgrade to 20 without actually installing MC19 again. Is this possible?

I think you just need to install your MC19 license, inside MC20, and then purchase to get the upgrade price.

I have MC17. I just bought a MC20 licence (Windows) more or less as support for the work you do with a very nice piece of software. I'm in no rush to start using MC20, but is there any way to move all my data from MC17 to MC20? With data I mean things like the library, the smartlists/playlists, the general settings, the views... the works?

Having similar issues. I installed mc20 and it seemed fine. But I needed to use mc18 with all my old playlists to prepare a radio show. When I started mc18 it would bring up mc20 and sound was quite distorted. Had to uninstall mc20, now wondering if there is a better way to install, so it saves playlists, etc. Is it safe to assume that if I name playlists the same in mc20 that the files will appear in the lists? (Playlists are shown in the tags, I guess this info is stored in the files?).
-
I think I solved this by myself and it was simple actually: I originally had a folder called "MC Stuff" (not the installation folder) under which I had
- Cover Art
- Library
- Library backups
- Podcasts
I copied the folder "MC Stuff" to "MC 20 Stuff" and then just added a new local library in the MC20 library manager. All playlists, smartlists and views (which I didn't have many) seem to be in place.
I'm happy... at least until I figure out something important that might be missing... ;-)
-
You can backup in an older version and restore in the newer version. This will work with MC19 > MC20 and probably with MC18 > MC20, but in earlier versions the backup contains only the library, and not the settings.
-
Yes, I now notcied that the settings were left behind since I have MC 17. Well, I'll just have to go through the settings manually again and try toi figure out what each setting means in practice...

The update button on my Media Center 12 says an upgrade to 17.0.180 is available for 26.98. Will I have to pay more to further upgrade to version 20?
I haven't upgraded in a long time, but I've upgraded more than once. $26.98 is all I can afford and I don't want to be stuck with an older version after I upgrade. Can I upgrade directly to version 20?

Just download from our download page. Then purchase from the Help menu in the program. Don't continue unless you see the correct price. Thanks for your purchase.
-
can anyone help me please:
when I follow the upgrade link for MC20 it returns and error:
Error
This product is no longer for sale.
A newer version is available on the download page.
More information is available on Interact
I know there were similar issues when MC19 was released; the other issue will be that the registration code won't work if I manually change the link address?
any help greatly appreciated thank you

can anyone help me please:
Install the latest version of the program from the top of this board, and then purchase from within the program.
-
Download from jriver.com and install.
-
hi again
thank you for coming back to me.
I got it to work by downloading latest version, and then within the help menu I selected Install License and entered by registration key from my old version.
(if you select Buy Media Center, it charges you full price, so don't go down that road)
thanks!

If I run MC20 on a PC and also an Id (purchased about two weeks ago), and want to keep both current, do I need to buy the Master License Upgrade?
-
No. The Id software gets upgraded automatically.
-
I purchased and downloaded the upgrade to MC20 today but can't seem to implement it; it's still MC19 when I check under: HELP/REGISTRATION and I don't know how to get it to work (or how to tell the difference other than through the Help/Registration tab). Help? Suggestions? (Refund?) And still no return of the mini skins?
-
Did you download and install?
-
As I said, I downloaded it. Everything said that it would automatically install/upgrade. No, I didn't install it; (if I had, we wouldn't be having this discussion).

You will have to install the Media Center 20 you downloaded. It will use the same library and settings that 19 did.
-
You must install it. Then restore your MC20 license.

I've followed your instructions repeatedly with no success. I'm still running MC19. I was happy with older versions and regret spending time and money for an upgrade that isn't happening and, as I said at the beginning of our conversation here, I'm done. I'll have to settle for MC19 and the loss of money to a non upgrade.
-
You said you downloaded MC20.
You said you didn't install it. You must install it.
MC21 builds will be released in a few weeks. The license also works with MC20.
-
I'll have to settle for MC19 and the loss of money to a non upgrade.
I suggest that you wait until a couple of weeks after MC21 is released, and then ask for help again when the process is fresh in all our minds. That will save you going through two upgrade processes.
It isn't a difficult process, and if you have tried to install MC20, then you probably have both MC19 and MC20 on your PC right now, since they will install by default into different directories. I suspect that you are trying to start MC by clicking on the old MC19 icon, rather than the new MC20 icon. They look the same, but will be in different places.
Anyway, wait if you like, and then ask for specific help.

Hi -
I haven't downloaded MC on my last couple of computers (commitment issues after hd crashes), but decided I wanted the best on this one, so here I am. I have restores for MC11, 13, and 15. I was going to ask a question about upgrading, but I read the faq ;D so I just wanted to say THANK YOU for allowing people to upgrade even back to the dark ages. I loved MJ and I loved MC, and I don't know why I waited so long to download again. Can't wait to see what's up with MC21!
-
Hi Everyone,
this is my first post in the forum so please excuse my ignorance...
I have MC19 installed and saw the email for the 18 dollar MC22 upgrade pre-oder which got me all excited so I went ahead and purchased!
Am I now right in thinking that I can only upgrade to MC22 if I have already got MC21?
Its just that the email did not mention this and I don't really want to have to fork out any more than I already have!
Truth be told I am pretty happy with MC19.
If someone could enlighten me I would be grateful!
Many thanks in advance
Johannes

You can install MC21 now and use your MC19 license to upgrade. Here is how to do it:
