Title: Updating tags from Librabry (dff)
Post by: Matias on August 16, 2014, 05:42:25 am
I renamed several fields for a dff album, renamed the files using the library tool OK, and when I hit update tags (from library) it says it went OK (0 failed), but when I open the files in foobar the old tags are unchanged. Any ideas?

The DFF format does not support tagging.

I see. Then how come foobar can retag them? Just wondering.

Well to be more specific, the format does not support standardized ID3 tagging.
I don't know what Foobar is doing to write tags to the file. Are other programs able to read them?

Actually these dff files were created from an ISO by ISO2DSD program. There are tags in there because JRiver, foobar and my DAP all of them could read the tags. They were capitalized, so I used the Clean function in JRiver and updated tags hoping it would save. It didn't, because my foobar and my DAP still show them capitalized. If I rename the tags etc and update, still nothing.
But again there are tags in there because the 3 applications could read them.

The format only has support for Artist and Title information: http://www.sonicstudio.com/pdf/dsd/DSDIFF_1.5_Spec.pdf (http://www.sonicstudio.com/pdf/dsd/DSDIFF_1.5_Spec.pdf)
As I understand it, the disc can contain additional metadata, but it is not stored in the DFF tracks.
DFF does not support standardized ID3 tagging like the DSF format does.

While the format supports Artist and Title information, Media Center does not write it to the files.

I don't know what Foobar is doing, whether it is writing to the designated Artist/Title chunks, or is somehow forcing ID3 tags onto the format by ignoring the specifications. (I don't know if that would even be possible?)

Generally it is recommended to keep your SACD rips as ISO instead of splitting them into individual tracks, or using the DSF format if you want to store metadata.

The ISO is also not practical to tag. Can't tell how many times I re-tagged the ISOs in my library only to find that it was useless when I moved it to another library.
Also ISO is not supported by some DAPs while dsf/dff is. Guess I should have sticked to dsf then only for tagging purposes.

Thanks.

Edit: in Artists view I filtered dff, selected all files dff 2.8MHz, and used Libraty Tools - Convert to DSD 2.8MHz, choosing Options to save in same folder and replace library. Converts all my dff to dsf like magic. :)
