Title: HDHomeRun Prime not fully releasing tuners
Post by: muzicman0 on August 22, 2014, 02:04:58 pm
When MC19 finishes recording a program, it appears that the tuner isn't released (based on the lights on the front of the tuner)...I will say, that it doesn't seem to affect whether the tuner is actually available most of the time, but something isn't getting released correctly, and I am wondering if this is what is causing me to miss the occasional recording.  Basically, it appears that all three tuners are always in use, and if I log in to the web page for the tuner, it says that it is streaming, even if nothing is being watched/recorded.  To be clear, WMC did not exhibit this behavior.

I see a similar behavior. I am using an HD Prime and when you exit MC19 then restart it, it will often show a 0 percent signal on a black screen. If I reboot it MC 19 will find the tuner. WMC does not seem to have this problem.

I have exactly the same problem with the same tuner, see here for a fuller description: http://yabb.JRiver.com/interact/index.php?topic=89724.msg626051#msg626051

It definitely causes me to miss occasional recordings and to have occasional playback errors as described in that thread.  To summarize based on recent observation, MC always fails to release the tuner if I've been recording or watching for a while (more than an hour); sometimes that's harmless because it wil release again when I try to access the tuner, but sometimes MC "locks" the tuner such that the tuner is unusable until I close all MC instances on the network and reopen.  This is compounded by the fact that a client trying to access a tuner "locked" by the server will not reliably fall back to other available tuners, instead just erroring out.

What happens if you restart the tuner?

Or disable WMC?

@Jim, for my part, I don't have WMC installed.

Restarting the tuner (hard or soft) doesn't typically resolve the problem for me; the tuner light will go off, but MC will still throw errors until I restart MC.  By contrast, restarting all MC instances clears the problem.

I have WMC installed, but don't have any tuners associated with it (I only use Netflix).  If I restart the tuner, it appears to free up all the tuners.

Thanks for reporting the problems.  I will look into it.

Anything on this? I stopped using TV a while back because of this.

I figured something out a short-term workaround in my setup.  I mentioned above I can sometimes get the original instance to "release the hold" by watching TV on that MC instance for a minute and then stopping playback. If I do that right after stopping playback the first time, it almost always "clears the hold."  But it has to be the instance of MC that created the "lock" by watching or recording

The really bad behavior seems to happen if the MC instance holding the tuner open is closed before I've manually gone in to "release" the tuner. MC does not appear to release the "held" tuner during shutdown, which results in the tuner being "locked" and showing up as unavailable to all instances of MC.  When that happens, I need to restart all instances of MC on my network and the Tuner to get things to work correctly again.  Restarting just the tuner doesn't fix it, I need to actually restart my server and all the clients.  At my house, this happens about every other day as the other members of my household are not "tuned in" to my workaround (pun intended)  :)

Is there any type of diagnostic you can add that at least shows why a scheduled recording wasn't recorded?  I know for a fact it showed up in the 'To Be Recorded' list.

Can you try the latest build and see if the problem is still there?

Now I have noticed that not only is it not releasing tuners, but I currently have data being written to my hard drive, but no one is watching live TV, and nothing is recording.

I haven't noticed any change/improvement in behavior with this issue, it's the exact same with the latest build.

Can you identify which drive, which file are being written to?

Yes, it was still streaming data to my recorded TV folder, and it was acting just like I was watching live TV.

When I checked the Tuner Status in the JRiver menu (Under TV Options|Advanced), it said that one of my tuners was streaming TV to a client, however, no one was watching TV on the client at the time.  The client was sitting on the Theater view main menu screen.

Firstly, let me acknowledge that the issue of MC not releasing HDHomeRun prime tuners is reproduced by me.  I have not figure out a solution yet.

The issue of MC continuing to write to disk seems to be a separate one, and I can not reproduce it.  More details are appreciated.  From your description, it appears to be MC server not getting "stop play channel" command when the client stopped showing.  How did you stop playing on client?  Did you just switch to another channel (a bug recently fixed)?  Did you press the Stop button?  Did you just close MC without clicking Stop?  Anything you can think of that will help me reproduce it will be appreciated.

unfortunately, I wasn't the one playing TV, and I noticed it while at work (I was VNC'd into my home).  I will try to recreate it and see what happens.  I know my 10 year old has a habit of pressing back when she is done, but it was HGTV so I am pretty sure it was my wife, and she usually uses stop...but I will run through some tests and see...

Had a few minutes, so I just VNC'd into my home network.  Ran some tests...it was a bit frustrating...

All tests done while playing TV from a client:

1) Press stop: Left .jtv (might have been .jtf) file, but did not continue writing data

2) Press back: continued to write to file, but when I closed the application, the folder was deleted, and writing stopped.

3) Reboot and restart JRiver on Client: Continues to record, and write files to disk. - Interesting...if I choose to watch the same channel, and then press stop, the data stops being written to the HDD.

The frustrating part is that I couldn't reproduce #3 again (tried 3 times), so I am uncertain if it was just luck of the draw, or if under those circumstances it will happen sometimes.

thank you for acknowledging this, i suspect it is more than just prime tuners.

New version 200044 fixes issue. Tuners now release.

Thanks Yaobing

I can also confirm that it is fully releasing the Tuners now.  Thanks.

If we could just get the slow motion playback of currently recording programs fixed, I would be so happy!!

Fixed here too

I don't think it is completely fixed yet.  I have a problem where when I am simultaneously watching a program while it is being recorded and then stopping the program, the record light remains on for a while even after it is past the recording time.   The recording light eventually goes out but then comes on intermittently when there is a nothing being recording or watched.   Restarting the JRiver server cures it until I do what I described above again.

(using MC20.0.48 on Windows 7; HD Homerun tuner)

It could be a different issue.  Did you watch the channel being recorded on a client or the server?

On the server.  I am the only user although I use MC client on several different machines.

I checked the status message in JRiver when the phantom record light comes on without recording and it shows it as "scanning" not recording.   Why?

Where did you see "scanning"?

Where did you see "scanning"?

In the JRiver tools->options->television->advanced->show status

That is weird.  Status "scanning" applies to a tuner that is either scanning for channels, or scanning for EPG.  Neither apply to HDHomeRun Prime.

Is your device HDHomeRun Prime, or HDHomeRun Dual?

HDHomeRun Dual.   Sorry, I didn't realize this thread was just about the Prime which I am not familiar with.

OK.  Are you in North America?  And do you use the device for over-the-air channels?

The only way a device can be used for "scanning", other than scanning for channels, is to scan electronic program guide over-the-air for ATSC devices.  Have you scheduled such scanning in the background?

Yes, North America, over-the-air only.    I have not scheduled any scanning in the background that  I know of.

Just to make sure, you can run "Load Program Guide..." wizard once, and check what EPG profiles are listed on the second page.  When on the first page, make sure you do not select Over the air scan (select the recommended option instead).  Is "Over the air scan" one of listed profiles on the second page?

Yes, it is one of two options listed on the second page and is checked. Should I uncheck it?

Yes, uncheck it.  When the profile is checked, MC would load your tuner and run over-the-air program guide scan, once a day, or more frequently if you configured it to do so.
