Hi quick question. I may not be the only jazz fan who is struggiling with this.
Let's say I have a nice collection of
Cannonball Adderley records.
Problem is, some of them are by Cannonball Adderley, some by the Cannonball Adderley Sextet, some by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, and then I have this one: Cannonball Adderley & Bill Evans... You get the idea: jazz artists are working in many different formations.
To be able to retrieve all my Cannonball Adderley easily, I created a library field (let's call it 01 Album artist) with the following options:
- data type: List
- Relational: Not relational
- Edit Type: List
then in Calculated Data, I put this expression to work:
[01 Album Artist]&datatype=list (list between brackets)
So, on an album like the Cannonball Adderley Sextet In San Francisco,
I'll enter the following data:
Adderley, Cannonball;Cannonball Adderley Sextet
in the 01 Album artist field
Then I created a Library View with the 01 Album artist as the 1st category (and Albums as second category)
All is very well, all albums having Cannonball Adderley as an Album Artist are grouped.
But in the Thumbnail text of Cannonball Adderley, the name of the 01 Album artist appears as [Varies].
Is there a way for it to be shown as Cannonball Adderley?

I have the same problem with classical.
I have performances by
Gideon Kremer
Martha Argerich
But also by the duo Gideon Kremer / Martha Argerich
The way I solved this
Album Artist is single value, Artist is multiple value
I put all the individual performers in the Artist tag.
Create a view on Artist (this is probably equivalent to your method but without using a custom tag)
The Album Artist is the one I consider leading and this value can be used in the thumbnail text.
If you see to is that the Album Artist is the same for the entire Album (a must, otherwise it will split the album) you get rid of the [Varies]

Actually my problem is a bit weirder...
As you can see here, the group "Cannonball Adderley" does appear on the left pane:

But on the right pane, it will still show as "Varies" (but its position will be at the right alphabetical spot for Adderley)

The thumbnail text is not right. But the group text in the left pane is right.

If I could see the screenshots :)

Oh u can't see them?

Is it working now?

Maybe I'm missing something, but is there a reason you can't just use a single album artist and then use a semicolon delineated list for all of the artist and ensemble variations in the artist field as MC was designed to handle?
-
Can see them.
It works as intended.
At the left you have the individual artist
As you can see in the first screen shot, there are different artist for each album
Hence if you group it will become Varies
What you can try is one uniform Album Artist for thumbnail text
If you are very strict, always put Adderly as the first in the Artist, you can use an expression like ListItem([Artist],1) (not tested)

Possibly but what about duets. like a Paul Bley and Gary Burton duet album?

But they are grouped in the left pane as well, isn't it? Why can't the left and right panes display groups with the same syntax?

Are they?
In the first pic you select Adderley in the tree and the left pane shows all tracks grouped by album.
In the second pic the left pane is grouped by artist (all albums where Adderly plays) but it is still a list so Adderly/Aderly & Evans/etc.
In a tree the list breakdowns into individual entries, in a single field (thumbnail text) it doesn't.
A bit counter intuitive
-
This is not an important issue, but it is still bugging me. I appreciate the time you take helping me.
In the 2nd pic, the Addeley group is not selected. This is what I wanted to show you.
The left and the right panes both show albums grouped by 01 Album Artist
But on the left pane, the group appears as Adderley, Cannonball.
On the right, the thumbnail text shows [Varies]
The weird thing is, I am almost sure that in my previous library customization (that was destroyed a year ago, don't ask), I am almost positive that it did appear correctly.
-
You have a point
If it is grouped by 01 Artist I expect each different instance of this tag to be used as a group by
Adderly/Quintet
Adderly/Evans
Adderly/Sextet
etc.
-
I found the solution, but completely by mistake, and hopefully somebody can explain to me the logic behind it, so I'll understand better what happened.
In the thumbnail text option:
I replaced my user field [01 Artiste de l'album] by the common field [Name]
