Title: Rapid crashing - help!
Post by: Nick on January 31, 2002, 07:53:50 am
I've been using MJ for about a week and was so impressed I upgraded to plus, got my .rrg file and it installed fine on my desktop (Win 2000).  I also put the program on my laptop (where I really intend to use it) and it worked fine until the day I brought the .rrg file home to upgrade, and it crashed - wiped clean off the screen (I don't think it crashed when I attempted to upgrade, I don't think I even got that far...).  Attempts to restart always gave the same result: the opening screen would come up, the the program would be visible for 1 sec, then gone.  I uninstalled and reinstalled several times but no luck.  I re-downloaded from  the website and brought that home, reinstalled and got the same result. I changed the properties to "open in full window" and got a slightly different result: it would open for a few seconds, then windows would report "mediajukebox.e.exe (not a typo)is generating errors and will be closed", then it would close a few seconds later.  Dr. Watson gave the following report:

Application exception occurred:
       App:  (pid=304)
       When: 1/29/2002 @ 23:50:20.367
       Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

  0 _Total.exe

(Plus a bunch of other illegible code).  I believe the problem lies with the "access violation" You can see the PID error is #304, which in the list above is Media Jukebox.e.exe).

Help me please!  I can't take any more installing/uninstalling...Nick

I think you need admin rights on the system you install MJ on. Just a guess.

Gatobrit - thanks for the comment. I'm the only user of the machine - I believe that makes me the administrator in Win2000Pro

Let us know.

I agree, maybe ver. 8 is the quick fix. Thanks

I don't know if that's necessarily the case.  To be sure, go to Control Panel, Users and Passwords, then locate your user name under "User Names", and check the Group on the right.  It should be "Administrators".

Yeah. Nick, just make sure. It's not always the case. I work in IT and we don't send our laptops out with the regular user enabled to have admin rights...

I'm not sure what Scronch is referring to as to who killed who, but anyway...

Last night ver. 8 didn't load properly - It went through the first couple of screens, then flashed a bit and disappeared, like it was trying open after installation but couldn't.  Clicking on the icon did nothing, and unlike ver 7 where I could change properties to "open in full screen" and get it to at least cough a bit, ver 8 was dead as a doornail.  I'll double-check admin rights tonite and try again. I'm not giving up yet!

OK - I confirmed that I have administrator rights on my laptop. I next tried to install MJ7 and MJ8 while logged in as administrator and still no luck.  I did a full system check and all is fine. I went through the event log from the time the problems started and came up with three different events that might have some clues as to what's going on (below).  The third one, with its NBT problem smells funny to me, but then I don't have a good idea as to what NBT is...

Recap: System is Dell Latitude, Win2000Pro, 256 MB ram, problem: MJ7.2.280 or latest MJ8 appears to load correctly but program can't start (either generates errors, or doesn't do anything.)

Here is what I dug out of the Event Viewer/application log:

Any help greatly appreciated!  Nick

I was looking at the thread from bditty and it looks a bit similar to my problem.
