Title: Can anyone recommend the "definative" text on JRiver MC
Post by: HiRez_Lover on October 21, 2014, 03:45:06 pm
Hi All,
New to this board and JRiver.  I have been playing around with the software for a few weeks now and find it
feature-filled and very sophisticated.

I realize there are bits and pieces of all sorts of information on this board, but I guess I'm looking
for a primer on the software (at the very least-"JRiver for Dummies?"). "The Definitive Guide to JRiver"
would be even better.

If anyone knows of a book or can point to such on the web I would appreciate it.

TIA
jay

Thank you. Lots of info here but still not a guide that shows you steps-by-step.
But I will definitely book mark it.

Thanks,
Jay

I know of no book.

If there was one, it probably would have been me that wrote it.  I've thought about it, but writing computer texts for niche products for a penny a word is a sucker's game.  The wiki has some great information, and more importantly, this forum has some amazing people.

Here's a good place to get started:

Read, search, and ask away.

The biggest issue with any book or guide is that the configuration is mostly limited by your imagination and/or actual needs.  It is not designed to work 'just one way', it can be tweaked and configured to work with pretty much any type of library.  The needs of a jazz aficionado will differ from a classical music lover which will differ again from a punk rocker or with someone who just wants to watch movies.

IMHO, your best bet is to think about what you want to use MC for, get your content in and tagged, then come to the forum and ask specific questions about how to make it do what you want.

Well, that's true, but the biggest issue is that MC changes fairly rapidly, and keeping a book up-to-date would be a nightmare of epic proportions.  Even keeping the Wiki up-to-date is nigh-impossible.

Have a look to the website of Vincent Kars, http://thewelltemperedcomputer.com/SW/Players/MC14/MC14_intro.htm
It's really a good starting point, even if some information would have to be updated for the latest features.

I fix my last statement, the website is up to date. Even the latest WDM feature is described.

Yeah.  Vincent is pretty on it.  I don't always agree with every single thing he says and recommends, and there is some old stuff there.  But there is good advice there, and he keeps it pretty well updated.

He kicks around on the forum here quite a bit too.  Nice chap.
