I can't configure the Playback options for external speakers on my Macbook Pro Retina. I'm running Yosemite but had the same problem before I upgraded so it's not related to that. It does work with iTunes, Youtube, etc so it should not be a hardware or driver issue.
When I configure my playback options, I have:
(Default) [Core Audio]
Airplay [Core Audio]
Bose USB Audio [Core Audio]
Built-in Output [Core Audio]
The only one that works is Built-in Output [Core Audio] which plays through the internal PC speakers. I can't configure it to play through my external speakers.
When I pick Bose USB Audio [Core Audio] (or (Default) [Core Audio]) I get a Playback problem dialog box saying:
Playback could not be started on the output 'Core Audio' using format '44.1kHz 2ch' which makes no sense to me.
Any suggestions?

Check your audio/midi setup in system preferences. It should be set so that sound output is set for your external Bose speakers; also on the same screen check that the output format is set for 44.1.

Also, try different sample rates in DSP Studio > Output Format. Start with 48khz.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I had already made this change. That's what made it work for other output (other than MC). But it did not help with MC. However Matt's suggestion did work.

Hi Matt,
This worked. I set it to 48kHZ.
When playing back it shows
Source: 44.1kHz 64 bit 2 ch
Internal: 48kHz 64 bit 6ch
