Title: When playing, JRiver blocks other sounds
Post by: stumpygremlin on November 11, 2014, 03:56:36 pm
How do I stop that? (So that I can hear IM dings or e-mail alerts, etc.)

Uncheck Tools -> Options -> Device Settings -> Open device for exclusive output.

It isn't as simple as just unchecking the box.  Read:

Hm, so changing output to Direct Sound and unchecking the box should do the trick?!

Question is: does stumpygremlin want/need WASAPI. I'd guess, if I'd use the same speakersystem for music and system sounds (IM etc) I'd probably be ok with Direct Sound.

No.  You can either change to DirectSound (which always uses the mixer) or disable Exclusive Access in WASAPI.  There's no such thing as Exclusive Access in DirectSound mode.

My preference would almost always be to stick with WASAPI, and if needed, disable Exclusive Access.  However, you have to make adjustments to the DSP if you do this for it to be practical.  Otherwise, either music or video playback will fail (and, depending on your setting in the Windows Sound Control Panel, then essentially all playback would fail).

Read the article.  The fiddly bits are in the Benefits and Considerations section and below.
