Title: wrong channel assignment
Post by: gubab on November 17, 2014, 02:14:08 pm
I bought some 5.0 album downloads from Qobuz. All have in common, that the right surround channel is empty. According to Qobuz and the publishing labels channel 4 ( sub) is empty but not right surround. So JRiver seems to to a wrong allocation of the empty channel 4. What can I do about this issue?

Kind regards

Burkhard

I don't have a Mac, but I presume the DSP panel is similar. Try setting up a zone and using a parametrique equalizer filter ... (this was posted in another thread, so I'm just copy/pasting from MWillems
Maybe you can make it think that the sub is surround right by doing this ..

It's been discussed before, but there's currently no way to rename them.  You can change the order using the "order channels" filter, which can be helpful.  The default order of the channels is different in 5.1 and 7.1 because that's the standard.  In 5.1 the channels are 0=L, 1=R, 2=C, 3=S, 4=SL, 5=SR.  In 7.1 the channels are 0=L, 1=R, 2=C, 3=S, 4=RL, 5=RR, 6=SL, 7=SR.

Not sure if JRiver is "wrongly allocating" this or if the "publishing label" didn't have their heads wedged, not following standard practices. You could try different output settings like the 5.1 and 4 channel, but I presume you have played with those already.

(btw, I thought the sub channel was always channel 3, but I could be wrong about that one?)

Can you put one of those tracks in Dropbox or something and send us a link so we can test it out?

We assume a 5 channel file is:
KSAUDIO_SPEAKER_STEREO | SPEAKER_SIDE_LEFT | SPEAKER_SIDE_RIGHT | SPEAKER_FRONT_CENTER

Is that wrong for these files?

Matt,
Qobuz and Mr Frommen from Aeolus Label confirmed:

The 5.1 "normal" channels position is :
L
R
C
LFE
LS
Rs

With these files channel 4 is empty according to Qobuz. In JRiver DSP Analyser I can See that Rs is empty and The missing Rs seems to be allocated to the sub channel.
Kind regards
Burkhard

"All 5.1 systems use the same speaker channels and configuration, having a front left and right, a center channel, two surround channels and a subwoofer."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.1_surround_sound

I can't find a standard for 5.0.

Is Output Format set to "Source Number of Channels" or "5.1 Channels"? It probably needs to be set to "5.1 Channels" to work properly.
