I haven't used particles much.
Is it possible to store a Blu-ray ISO or BDMV file structure so that the titles can be tagged and stored as individual entries in the library so you can launch directly into, for example "The directors cut" on an ISO or BDMV structure?
If it can do Titles that's a pretty good workaround to not having Blu-ray menu support.
Audio and subtitles are already directly accessible in theatre view, so really the only other use for native Blu-ray menus is for titles.
Since Particles create library entries for the Titles on a Blu-ray (extras and alternate cuts etc)
Works fine for Standard View but not in Theatre View.
Without a Stacks View in Theatre View I take this back! :) Sorry if I'm uncovering old wounds... well kinda sorry. :P
I cant see what all the fuss is about for native menus. Sure it's an extra step in ripping, but we are using a library server. If you want menus, use the darn disc. ;) (Flame suite on)

Particles are actually made for Titles (not Chapters) our of the box, so you rip to BDMV stucture, the Auto Create BD Title Particles are for you! You will get a bunch depending on your disk but you delete all the ones you don't want then tag the rest up eg Theatrical vs Alternative ending. Also works for TV Shows as most eps are stored in it's own playlist.
All the work MrC was doing with me was on how to extend this to chapters so you could then import music "tracks" (as they are normally a chapter).
Thanks
Nathan

Ahhhhhhh.....
So I take it that MKV and ISO wont work, only BDMV?
Even if it only works with BDMV, that's a pretty neat trick to work around the lack of native Blu-ray menu support.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that didn't understand that till now.
Maybe a bigger point should be made about particles. Is there a "how to get the best out of MC20 for Blu-ray" thread somewhere?

I'm not helping.

It's not important.

Ahhhh to hard to find stuff oand post on a phone... plus I need more time to find something witty for Glynor!

Went back and read your old Theatre View Stacks comments.. now I understand. :)
hmmmmm

It look like this is a very old discussion and I think this might be an old solution but I think I've found a way to get stacks and particles to work in Theatre View with some custom filters.
Has this been done before?
I setup another filter view under Movie called Movie Extras and then added Series and a Season filter to that.
Then as a test I tagged each particle with a different Season with a short description, eg: 1 Movie, 2 Trailers, 3 Extras, etc etc
I tagged the Series with the movie name.
I tagged each particle as episode 1. Not sure I needed this, but anyway.
Now I can collapse the particles stacks so only the movie shows up in the normal theatre view, and If I want to see the extras, I go to the Movie Extras roller and find the movie, select it and drill down into the movie and I can see all the particles with their individual descriptions so I can pick what I want to watch from the extras.
I'll post some screenshots tomorrow when I've had a chance to tag a few properly and you can tell me what you think.
I'm guessing you could also group tag some of them into Seasons (for example Deleted Scenes as a Season) and have another level below that with episodes for each deleted scene.
And to take it another step further, you could create your own custom database fields for Movie Extras, Deleted Scenes, Extras etc and filter on those instead of using the default fields for episodic shows.

This is kind of a long thread. Are there one or two easy things we could change about particles that would improve the experience?
-
I don't use them because of:
* "Rename, Move, & Copy Files" does not work on Particles - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=75334.0
And, to a lesser degree...
* Sidecar Files & Particles - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=80828.0
But, I'll let Nathan answer you for real as he knows the system way better than I do (because, I don't use them, repeat ad infinitum).
-
I'd love to mess with them (for multi-episode TV shows/miniseries), but not being in the sidecar means I don't.

Hi Matt,
These two for sure, and since you've been working on Theatre View recently.... ;D Enable us to go into a stack in theatre view and select the title we want to play, just like in Series and Episodes.
The first two are more maintenance issues, probably rarely encountered but no doubt a pain when you need to do some maintenance.
The latter is more an every day thing that effects "usability", which also happens to be high on your radar these days. :)
(it also addresses the "no Blu-ray menu support" debate which in my opinion is one of the biggest issues that could easily be solved by having Stacks and Particles work in Theatre View)

This is kind of a long thread. Are there one or two easy things we could change about particles that would improve the experience?
Yup: here are the outstanding limitations/bugs with Particles, and most look relatively easy but what would I know! ;D
Core Library Maintenance Stuff
- "Rename, Move, & Copy Files" does not work on Particles - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=75334.0 : I thought this had been fixed but I've seen other posting problems recently.
- Sidecar Files & Particles - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=80828.0 : If something goes wrong and you need to "Update Library from Tags" you are out of luck
- "Right Click --> Stacks --> Advanced --> Create Particle" action is not added to the "Recent command" list : Just a time saver as when making alot of particle entries (for say time based particles to do chapters you have to navigate through the menu over and over)
- Time based Particle Duration not correct in DB but correct when it plays - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=75371.0
Playback Stuff - From memory I believe this one is "Hard" due to the way DVD's are made and is more of a note
- No Subtitles or Languages with DVD Particles - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=82343.0
Random Bug
- Incorrect Filename on Create Particles (sometime) - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=81508.0 (especially irritating due to the Create Particle not being on the Recent Command list)
New Feature
- Allow particles to be created by Chapters (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=89627.0) - MrC worked pretty hard on getting this working with some hacks using Python but with his absence there is no way to maintain it.
Happy to expand, test, update any of these threads etc - Thanks for looking ;D

This is kind of a long thread. Are there one or two easy things we could change about particles that would improve the experience?
I have over a hundred concert videos as MKV's with each song title as a chapter. It would be great if a particle for each chapter (song in this case) could be automatically generated. Some great play lists could be made hopping around from show to show picking individual songs.

Way to go dude. Makes too much sense to me. Here, have a plus one from me and see how you go .. ;)

I think that Matt is almost finished with the improvements ;D

ps... Matt should have an Eagles BD to test with!

Am i right in thinking that #2 is the one that means all your work can be lost if something goes wrong with your library because there is no external backup of the metadata?
If so this is #1 by a country mile imv before new features are added. You could mitigate your #1 for example by adding a way to do a bulk load from some simple delimited format.
-
I'm a +1 for #1 ... ;)
-
I recently lost over an hour's worth of work with #3.
I created a bunch of particles for a BluRay mkv, and then moved the file. To my horror, none of the particles were to be found after, even though they displayed the correct path to the new location of the mkv.
This wouldn't be so bad if we had #1, I guess, so that I could approximately recreate the particles from the chapters. It was a classical music concert BD with over 20 chapters.
