Title: Sound stuttering(Breaks) while using Dolby digital encoding
Post by: coolfriend693 on February 21, 2015, 08:41:31 am
Hi
My specs: i5 4440
               Gtx 970
               8gb ram
Spdif optical connection from sound card to home theatre
The problem that i face is wen i use dolby digital encoding in JRiver for watching movies there are breaks in the audio although video plays just fine.

And for Audio files it usually happens wen i do multitasking.

What seems to be the problem?

Try increasing the playback device's buffer size.
Tools → Options → Audio → Audio Device → Device Settings

Im using ASIO device
Changed buffering from 50ms to 500ms also use large hardware buffer size option enabled by default
The problem still persists

In that same dialog box, try hitting the "open driver control panel" option and see if you can increase the latency or ASIO buffer size there.

Depending on the driver, Media Center's ASIO buffer commands may not do anything.

Tried it long back... No luck :(

You want a long buffer size, 10ms is sure to have problems.

I don know much about latency and buffer size.... so to be clear do i increase the latency to its max??

Dropouts usually mean the audio buffer is running out, so you want to try a larger (longer) buffer to see if you can "outlast" the underruns.  The underruns are probably being caused by high DPC latency, for which the Asus cards are famous (it seems that the Asus control panel itself adds a fair amount)

You might want to try the 3rd party unified xonar drivers.  My experience is that the stock Asus drivers produced dropouts for me regardless of settings (I don't have a DG, but I have a DX and an ST from the same line).  The unified drivers are much more stable, and also can tolerate lower buffer settings.

I had tried the unified drivers some time back on my old rig (core2quad 8200+3gbram+gtx 260) but no improvements.. ill try them out again on this new rig..
Well i changed the latency from 10ms to 80ms in asus asio control panel... with mutlitasking there arent any "breaks" gottta try playing an entire movie tho... but latency and buffer are both connected somehow?? will increasing latency cause a/v mismatch???

Increasing the buffer will increase total latency, but DPC latency is a separate issue entirely.  JRiver generally takes buffers into account when playing video, so changing the buffer size shouldn't necessarily cause sync problems.

Are you saying you're actually getting a/v sync issues?  If so you can adjust the sync manually in JRiver.

can you tell  me what exactly happens when latency is increased in ASIO driver control panel and how it affects playback?

i also tried checking DPC latency...
with vlc player with its default settings for both audio and video files latecy is maintained under 500us
but with jriver MC dpc latency gets as high as 5000us (avg 2000us) for video files. i tried changing from asio with n without dolby, wsapi and direct sound.. its same and for audio it does shoot upto 1500us but avg is less than 500us

what does increased latency mean??? and what it can cause??

thx for ur replies guys......

Hi there,
Did you get this sorted out?

I am experiencing the exact same problem.
Looks like DTS sound works ok, but Dolby Digital breaks up. Video is smooth.

I haven't timed it, but it goes a little while, then there's a stutter, and like 20-40 seconds after that, there's about a second of no audio, then it comes back again. And so it repeats.

The hardware is brand new with newly installed Windows 8.1:
Asrock Extreme 6 with Realtek ALC1150 Audio Codec
Intel i5 CPU
Audio runs through SPDIF optical to a Onkyo reciever.
The video shows on a Sony VPL-HW40ES

The files played are MKV's.

Any tips would be appreciated. I've tried every setting I can find.

Why dont you stick with DTS then?? I have no option as my receiver supports oly DD so stuck with it..
Well there has been a significant improvement thx to the suggestion of  6233638 & mwillems
Change buffering from 50ms to 500ms from jriver ASIO driver settings.. Let knw if it works

Not all movies use DTS, and why limit yourself? The product should work right?

The buffer changes makes no difference I'm afraid. Tried that. I do not have an Asus soundcard so I don't use ASIO drivers.

I noticed that the change of channels to 2 channels (inside 5.1 container) seems to help a little. The long 1 second "pause" is gone and only the small stuttering left.
I will again look at the suggestions you mentioned.
Thanks!

As far as i know JRiver encodes movies in DD/DTS irrespective of the source having the DD/DTS "tracks"..
So i would say any movie will give u output in 5.1 if it has audio in 5.1... it doesn matter if its DD or DTS cz that job is done by jriver to encode and pass it on to the receiver

Since i have a high end PC i have no option but to say jriver DD encoding needs improvement or perhaps thats how a forced DD encoding works... :-\
