Sometimes when I edit a tag directly from the media library screen it will save the tag instantly and I will not notice a delay. Usually it takes a lot longer though. For example, if I am changing the name of an album... it could take up to 3 or 4 minutes. Is this normal?

Maybe.
MC9 taging is better
But if you have ID3v2 turned on the file needs to be saved again from start to end.
There was some tweeking in MC9 to make it faster than MJ8

Does the same hold true for saving/changing covert art for albums, even if they are not saved as part of the file?
-
Conditions that can cause a whole file save...
1) Image (or other) placed into file
2) After a tag edit, more characters are present than were there originally**
3) For mp3's, you tell it to write ID3v2 tags (when there weren't any before)
**for LAME, oggenc, etc...during encoding, if you used a switch in the command line like this (for LAME)...--pad-id3v2...then it pads the tags with spaces which reduces or eliminates the need for whole file saves if the padding is large enough. Note that if the file has only ID3v1 tags and your not adding v2, then it shouldn't re-save the whole file (because the tags are at the end of the file)

One other thing the draw back to ID3v1 is there is a Chr limit per field of 30 and 28 chrs per field (Artist, Album, Songname, Comment) etc....
I used only ID3v1.1 untill MC9 taging Improved and now i think it does just as good of a job with the speed as other taggers do.

Good point King...and because of that limit you can't pad ID3v1 tags. I've got MJ set up to strip the v1 tags out of mp3's (if present).

PS: Did you get a life yet? If so, did it cost much? Mine is still on layaway. Someday though.....
