Title: The sad state of visualizers
Post by: thel0rax on March 04, 2015, 10:49:33 pm
Unless I've totally glanced over something, It seems to me that the visualizers available for JRiver (and every other windows music player aside from iTunes) haven't made any improvements since Windows 2000 era. Is this just not something people don't care about anymore? I really love apple's visualizers, but not enough to sacrifice all of the awesomeness that JRiver offers.

I feel like there's gotta be a good reason for the huge lack of progress in this area.. I know iTunes uses Quicktime for its visualizations, but that's the only real technology difference I see between the two.

Any thoughts?

Hi thel0rax,

Have you tried Milkdrop2? It takes some tweaking to get it running on MC20, but it's pretty awesome and free with thousands of available presets.
Here's the thread w/ download link:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=82551.0

I had to do all the steps to get it working on the new system (8.1 arggghhhh)...
1). Install
2). Import .reg file
3). Manually edit registry
as mentioned in the thread, PLUS one additional step;
4). Install the DirectX legacy pack from Microsoft to get it working.

NOTE: I had to close some Chrome processes manually and clean out the temp install directory (i.e. c:/users/your_name/AppData/Local/Temp/) in order to successfully complete the DX installation. It was throwing an error and failing.

Here's the link for the DirectX legacy support installer (it won't affect your DirectX 11 or 12 setup):

Not the smoothest install, but well worth the effort, as nothing is as sweet as Milkdrop2 eye-candy. If you get it going, be sure to d/l the preset packs and check out the keyboard shortcuts. Hope this helps you out!
William
p.s.
I think I'll copy this to the Milkdrop2 thread in case it helps some other poor soul who is running Win 8.1, sigh.

I tried this out and ended up getting it. Milkdrop2 sounds cool, but this was painless. Thanks.
