Title: How to transfer playlists from JRiver 19 to JRiver 20?
Post by: Blueshound24 on March 24, 2015, 01:02:06 pm
This is my first post here, and I have been a happy customer of JRiver 19 since Feb 2014 and I have spent a lot of time creating my playlists. So I finally I bought the license to upgrade to JRiver 20 and the auto import did not import my playlists from JRiver 19. Apparently it just imported everything it could find on my hard drive. Is there any way to recover my playlists I created with version 19?

Thanks in advance for any input!

You want to backup your library in MC19 and restore it in MC20.

It should be pretty painless.

I am a bit of a noob and computer challenged. Would you be able to direct me, in detail, how to go about that?
Thanks.

In MC19, backup library to a file. In MC20 restore library from that file.

Thanks for your help, however, I did as you described and none of my playlists from 19 were restored in 20. I must be doing something wrong...

Ok, I thought the problem might have been using a windows "standard user" account vs "administrator" account. So I changed to administrator and rebooted.I then repeated backing up the library in 19, then restored in 20, to no avail. I am still not seeing my playlists in 20.

Is there a way to resolve this?

Thanks for any help.

Make sure both boxes are checked.

All of this is covered in pretty good detail here:

They were pre-checked upon download of MC 20 and I didn't change it.

I followed those instructions as well without success:(

Would a complete uninstall, then reinstall of MC20 be a possible fix?

If those instructions didn't work, something truly wacky is going on.

Are you sure you are:
1. Opening MC19.
2. Making a Library Backup there (save it somewhere easy to find, like on your Desktop).
3. Closing MC19.
4. Opening MC20.
5. Picking your current Library in the Library manager, and then restoring from the backup you made in step 2.

This forces everything in MC20 to be identical.  I can't imagine what else could be happening.

THANK YOU! That worked by saving it to the Desktop!  :D

For whatever reason it wouldn't restore by the normal route of backing up version 19 to "my documents/documents library/jriver media center 20", and then restoring to version 20 from that location.

You made my day much better.

Glad it worked.

I can't know without seeing it, of course, but I think what was happening is: You weren't restoring the backup you made in MC19, but were restoring one of the automatic backups that MC20 makes itself.  If you just opened it up and clicked Save in the first spot MC19 wanted to save the backup, this is NOT the same folder that MC20 would be looking in for the backup.

MC19 uses: <User Directory>\Documents\JRiver\Media Center 19\Library Backups
MC20 uses: <User Directory>\Documents\JRiver\Media Center 20\Library Backups

Notice, the 19 and 20.  Those aren't the same folders.  They might look the same, because they'd both contain backups in ZIP files that would work, so it might look confusing.  I think you made the backup in the MC19's version of the folder.  Then opened MC and looked in the MC20's version of the folder for the backup.  The one you found was not the same one you just made a minute ago, but one of the automatic ones that MC20 has been making by itself.

My theory anyway.  Glad you got it sorted, again.

That could very well be what happened... I'm just glad it worked.

By the way, I noticed in version 20 there were many more useful "smartlists" under playlists than I had in version 19. However, when I restored I had the "restore settings" box checked, and I suppose it deleted all those extra smartlists to only leave remaining in my upgraded version 20 the eight or so I had in version 19.

Would there be any way to get them back without a total uninstall/reinstall?

Thanks again for your time.

It wasn't the settings, which is stuff like your Audio setup and the stuff set in Tools > Options.  Playlists and Smartlists are both part of the Library (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library).

You can restore the stock Smartlists:

You may also want to read through the Smartlists article (which I recently revised and made better):

Glynor, with your help, I was able to restore the stock smartlist and restore my libraries, and I thank you for your time!
