The output of JRiver goes to a surround processor. Is there a difference audio wise between HDMI out (from video card) and S/PDIF out (from sound card) for a two channel system?
In your opinion, is one better (less jitter) than the other?

They should be the same. Both will filler the buffer in the AVR's DAC. Of course S/PDIF only supports 2 ch decoded audio while HDMI supports more but in your case it is all 2ch anyway. If you are also pushing other content (such as video with Multi Channel) then HDMI will be more convenient.

Many thanks. I was only concerned with the jitter issue using HDMI but since there is no difference between HDMI and S/PDIF output for two channel, I wont need to purchase an expensive (like Xonar) soundcard. I'll use the HDMI which is on the video card.
