I have the latest version of JRiver installed on a HTPC running Windows 8.1. The HDMI port is connected to a Marantz receiver and I am using bitstreaming over HDMI.
The HTPC never shuts off but if I pause music or video and then turn the TV and receiver off for a few minutes, when I turn the TV and receiver back on, there is no sound. However, the screen shows media is still playing.
Does anyone have some insight as to why this is happening?

This is likely an HDMI handshaking issue, and the problem is with the receiver.
However, you should know that switching off HDMI devices during playback will mosty often result in a crash of MC, so you're not doing too badly. There are solutions to the problem, but they either require about $100 of hardware, or some time and patience to download software, read up on EDID information and learn how to fool the computer into thinking there is always a Marantz AVR that is on.

That isn't normal.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I can turn off my receiver and (after thinking about it for a long while) my TV gets passthrough and MC keeps playing.

With older receivers before passthrough was an option, or with the passthrough option disabled, the crash always happened for me.
Perhaps it was just my setup.

The receiver is only a few years old. It's a Marantz SR7005.
