Title: DSD playback on spitfire MK3 DAC - no DSD capability
Post by: wouterk on April 08, 2015, 03:17:47 am
A newby question:
The DAC will just support upto 96K PCM.
Which settings can I use for playback on Mac for DSD playback?
Thank you

In the Tools>Options>Audio
if you choose the Spitfire as the audio device, then choose [Bitstreaming: None]
Then go to [...DSP & Output Format]
In the Sample Rate, change all the Input higher than 96,000Hz to have the output at 88,200 or 96,000Hz.

By doing so, JRiver should convert DSD and any PCM higher than 96,000Hz to the sample rate that your DAC supports.

Thank you for prompt reply.
For DSD playback with your suggested settings I am just getting a very distorted noise.
Using latest MC 20 for Mac - 20.0.87

You could try turning off some of the sound quality features one by one until the noise goes away.

For example, turning off the Exclusive Access and Integer Mode in Audio Device>...Device Settings
Reducing the conversion sampling rate to 44.1kHz, etc...
When you find out what is causing the noise, you can try re-enabling the other settings to achieve the best sound quality.

Also, depending on the specifications of the computer, you may need to increase the buffering in the ...Device Settings

If your USB DAC plays 44.1 to 96kHz PCM files fine then there should be nothing different about playing DSD files converted by JRiver.
Just to make sure, try selecting the Built-In Output on the Mac to see if the DSD file plays fine.

DAC has both USB and optical. Because of the distance to the hifi system I am using optical.
For DSD I don't get music at all - Conversion does not seem to happen to the specified 96KHz PCM.
I am therefore still puzzled.

FLAC 24bit 44K sounds great.
When selecting higher output down to 44K - again just distorted noise, so PCM conversion does not seem to happen.

Hello wouterk,

Please make sure that you don't have Bitstream:DSD on.

Best regards,
