Newbie here. I have a library on a DLNA NAS server, and everything has worked fine, except for updating tags. Whenever I try to do this, I get a really vague error message.
I don't believe there's any permission issue (which is the only thing I can think of that might be a problem), as the library is mounted on my desktop, and I can edit the files in that directory manually.
Suggestions please?

I don't think that MC has the capability to write tags to a UPnP ContentDirectory.
Note: the UPnP specification does actually have methods for UPnP ContentDirectory tag editing; however to be fair to MC I have never seen any vendor who actually implemented those methods; so you should basically treat such a ContentDirectory as a read only resource...

Thanks. Had a feeling that might be the case.
So does that suggest I need to move the files back to a local drive, update all the metadata in jriver, then move it back to the server?
And if the jriver folks are reading this, if this is in fact the case, a more informative error message (like "cannot updated tags on a DLNA directory" or some such) would be really helpful.

If it's a NAS drive, why not just import the files in MC? See "Getting Started" in my signature for a link.
