Title: Upgrade fails to open
Post by: winggo on April 14, 2015, 09:00:37 am
Ran the software upgrade last night and now MC will not open.  First I get window that says "failed to open - retry or quite"   Then the error window comes up with the "Submit or dont submit".   I am running OS X 10.6.4 on an older Mac mini (2009)

I'm no expert, but here's what I would do if no one had a better idea:

1.  Remove Media Center from the Applications folder.
2.  Download the latest MC from the Interact forum (the top post here has the latest build).
3.  Open the DMG file that is downloaded.
4.  From the window that opens (with the contents of the DMG), drag Media Center into the Applications folder.
5.  Launch Media Center from your Applications folder as normal.

Your license, etc should all be intact, as that's stored outside of the application, as far as I know.

Brian.

Tried that and MC stays open for about 5 seconds and then closes down.  I think the error window was to be sent to JRiver automatically.  Why can't someone at JRiver see what the problem is and get back to me with a solution?

In that case, I'd go back to an older version that worked for you before.  For example if 20.0.60 worked, go back to that and see what happens.

Good luck!

Brian.

Can you try updating to 10.6.8 and see if it works then? There's a chance 10.6.4 might be too out-of-date in this case. I know video definitely won't work in 10.6 due to the lack of OpenGL 3 support.

Yeah... Why would you still be running 10.6.4?

I don't know for sure the exact state of support in MC20 for Snow Leopard. I know from the very first OSX build of MC, they recommended Lion or newer, and I think there was some talk of dropping Snow Leopard entirely.

But, certainly your only chance is to run the latest version of Snow Leopard.

And, your Mini can run both Yosemite and Mavericks (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201475) (whichever you choose), and the upgrades are free, so there's no real reason you can't upgrade your OS all the way current.  Yosemite would probably run better on it (it has less chrome), even, and you'll get security updates.

Getting Mavericks would be a little more complicated, because they don't offer it in the Mac App Store anymore, but you can probably find it out there on the Interwebs if you really would prefer not to go to the current OS.  In any case, you shouldn't stick to 10.6.4 certainly.

This is a common misconception.  It is NOT sent to JRiver.  The error reports are sent to Apple, but JRiver never sees them.

I updated to 10.6.8 last night and the latest version of jriver still does the same thing, starts up and runs for about 5 seconds before shutting down.

I first loaded JRiver on my Mac Mini about 3 weeks ago.  I am not sure what the number of that version was but it did load and run for me.  A couple of days ago I saw that the newest version had fixed the CD ripping problems for the Mac version so I upgraded to that.  That is when all the trouble started.

I decided to use JRiver on my Mac because I had a number of Flac files already on my disk drive and I didn't want to have to convert all of them to Apple loss less format.  I think I may have made a bid mistake by going with JRiver.  Not only did it cost me $70 it is full of "bugs"  and there is no real customer service to help with all the problems that the program has.  JRiver should institute a toll free customer service number that customers can call and get help solving these problems.  If it was free I wouldn't have grounds to complain.

Okay, that didn't help.  I wanted to get you on a marginally supported version of the OS first (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/OSX_System_Requirements), before we wasted any more time.

Please collect and post a Log, as described here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Guide

If you still have the old download, you can reinstall it and report back that detail as well.  It is possible that your Library has become corrupted.  You may need to restore from one of the automatic backups that MC makes.  The log ZIP file should have some clues.

I down loaded Yosemite last night and it solved the crash problem.  I was also able to rip some cds using the JRiver ripping function.  Thanks for the help.
