Title: moving MC install to new drive...
Post by: ferday on April 14, 2015, 03:48:07 pm
this is probably a dumb question and as usual i'll probably figure it out myself....

i finally got a (smallish) SSD to complete my new PC, it shall only contain Windows, MC and a few other programs i use regularly (Office).  currently MC is installed on a drive other than C:, i moved it some time ago with all the other program files "properly" by using symbolic links

so my question is...do i lose anything (speed) by just using the symbolic link trick again?  i want to maximize my SSD usage as much as possible...so am i better to re-install or is re-linking the link an acceptable process?

thx for any nerd tips

I'm no expert, but I'd thnk sure you'd lose the speed benefit, might even be slower than you are now.

I assume that your OS is installed on the SSD. A fast SSD with the OS and JRiver installed on the same drive is the way to go.

Actually should be really easy... first backup your library. Then fresh install of MC (if you are like me and you have skins and custom resources, saved views etc., you'll need to copy those to the same directory names, probably the default one's on, the SSD).

The just restore the library backup. As your data is not being moved there shouldn't be any tweaking of your config to do.

You don't have to uninstall the other, you can test them if you want and remove the old install later. Just make sure you are not auto running from win startup the server from two different drives.

Thanks Arindelle

unfortunately i had some issues with the moving of windows to the SSD and i lost a bunch of data.

fortunately none of my media files or JRiver settings...so at least i'm listening to music while trying to get my PC running again ;)

and the fresh JRiver install is on the SSD so i look forward to some good speed gains!
