Title: Normalize after encoding or importing
Post by: ndwek on September 25, 2003, 01:10:52 pm
Is there a way to normalize a song after encoding it or importing it into the library?

I'm importing a bunch of songs into my library and want them normalized and not just analyzed.

What format?

You can use MP3Gain to apply Replay Gain to mp3 files. This is not a tag based deal. It will alter your files.

-Replay gain will NOT change your files as I understand it. The replay gain info resides in MC not your files.

You can turn Replay Gain (normalize) on and off in DSP once the files have been analyzed.

That's true, but mp3gain will.

I'm looking to actually change the file and not just add analysis info to a tag. As I understand the Replay Gain function analyzes the file and adds info to it about sound levels while normalizing rewrites the whole file with the audio levels at their normalized level.
It is the latter option, normalizing and rewriting the file, which I'm interested in.

I encode in MP3 VBR.

As Sauzee sez: mp3 gain is the one you want to use.

MP3Gain works as a separate program and not inside of MC right?

Will I have to renormalize all the music I've encoded using MC? I encode with the option to normalize before encoding and I have it set to %100.

Correct

Latest MP3Gain can do both tag based RG or permanent RG by changing the music data. If you use the latter, then doing anything further with MC (or other) is redundant. The benefit here is that once applied, it is fully functional in anything that can play mp3's. RG in either form is recommended over normalization (though I have normalized before, dropping the peak to 90%, and have had good results). For tag based RG, MC only understands it's own system. So if you want to do tag based RG, and will only do playback thru MC, stick with the MC style.

edit: Setting normalization to 100% is risky, simply because on compression to a lossy format, the algorithms used can produce a clipped signal. One must keep in mind that lossy encoders can only approximate the original signal, so some headroom must be allowed. Drop your normalization to 90-95% to be safe.

Was there mention of Replay Gain? No. MP3Gain Huge difference. Try Google.

Who? Guess that was a good call on my part.

Machinehead: I guess I should have said "MC" replay gain. And you used the term "replay gain", but I misread the question. Geez.
