Title: JRiver Media Center 20 as Playback Device

Along with my usb dac (ifi nano) and my computer's soundcard, JRiver Media Center 20 appears in my list of playback devices in my Windows 8.1 Control Panel "Sound".

In what instances would I want to choose JRiver Media Center 20 as the playback device rather than my usb dac?

It routes all sound to MC.  MC is then your sound driver.  It's explained here:
