Title: Is it possible to hide the Tree for a particular zone

so that for one zone the tree is always hidden and after switching to another zone it becomes visible?

No.

You can hide zones, but then they're gone.

this is not directly related,  but you might like this. Matt added a cool little toggle that permits you do show/hide the tree. You can put an icon in your menu bar (look for Toggle Tree after right clicking to customize the tool bar). Also with the tree toggled off, if you go into the tag window (ALT+Enter) it will open it without having to hit the tree toggle button.
