I want to add some music to play along with my vacation photos - so when I start the "image slideshow" there is pre-selected background music playing. How do I do this?
Can I set it up so a specific album or playlist is used for each slide show (maybe based on the image folder or keyword)?

Yep. Easy-peasy.
1. Make a Playlist.
2. Add Images in the order you'd like them to play.
3. Add music in the order you'd like them to play (it doesn't matter if they're above or below the images in the list).
4. Play the Playlist.
5. Crack a beer and enjoy how awesome MC is.

A little more on this...
If you do it like glynor outlined, by way of a 'mixed media' playlist, when you kick off the playlist, your next, previous etc. buttons effect the music playing. Next gives you the next audio track. You have no control over the image slideshow. This is my preferred method.
You can also begin playback of any audio, then browse for some pictures to view at the same time, and start them playing too. You get kind of the same, only this way, next, previous etc. effect the slideshow, and you have no control over the audio.
One of my favourite smartlists here is one that plays me some random landscape images to random instrumental music. This got even better now we can turn off the captions with a remote control button.

I'm using Mac ver 21, and it only shows cover art; not the photos. Any solution? Thank you!

Confirmed. Just doing "play" on a mixed playlist of pictures and songs on MC21.0.25 for Mac doesn't show any pictures. Maybe there's some detail I'm missing.
Marko's two list way works. Start a playlist of music. Then select a playlist of pictures and "play" them. Then you get both at the same time. Of course control with forward and back goes through the pictures instead of the music. I've experimented with running these in two different tabs so I can control either one (music or pictures) based on which tab is selected. I'm not sure if it's useful to me or not yet. But interesting.

That just sounds like a bug.

I just tried this with a Coors light and it didn't detect any beer. I had to switch to a 3 Floyds Alpha King and the slideshow worked perfectly. ;)
