Title: cannot restore my licence

Can anyone help ive had to replace my hard drive on my pc and now im trying to restore my licence  but it wont except it ive had it emailed to me and I already had it written down so I know the numbers / letters are right , im not sure which version I had but think it was 20 what can I do
